Someone once told me you need to spread the ages of the dogs you run in competition out. We figured out why the past six months. We lost AFC Pepper this Spring, FC-FTCH Buck last month and this past weekend we lost Fred MH QAA. All lived wonderful long lives 14, 12 and would have been 13 this next month but does not make it any easier.
Fred came to us at age 5. Fred loved to play any retriever game there was and was good at all of them. Fred competed in the FT games was QAA and had an Amateur Second, went 8 series in the Canadian National Open, was a MH and qualified for the Master National, competed in the SRS as well as competed in the BHU. As long as there were birds involved he loved it. He did well in all of them but he was most successful as both an upland and waterfowl dog. I know everyone's hunting buddy is the best but I would put him against any guide dog out there as he was very impressive in the field and in the blind. Couple of my favorite Freddie stories: Early teal season August and I as well as a good friend and his son were sitting waiting for teal to come in. First group comes in and everyone unloads. I see 4 drop. Fred picks up the 2 in front of Aug and I very quickly and then picked up one in front of my buddy and his dog picked the other. Well Fred comes back swings his 100lb body in and is looking way out left like we missed one bird. I asked everyone if they saw another fall and everyone said no. Fred was convinced so I sent him, needles to say we dropped a 5th teal a good 150 yards to the right and Fred marked all 5 of them! Now the second Freddie story: To set the scene you have to know that Freddie was probably Pop Pops favorite trial dog. He always said that Fred would beat the two Field Champions any day of the week. There were times we would not run Fred due to time constraints or entry fees being so high. One particular weekend in Topeka we had all three boys there and running. Made it to the land blind with all 3 of them and had to run Pepper and Buck before Fred. Neither one of them did the blind and I remember being upset and telling Fred you better run this well or we are done for the weekend. Needless to say Fred ran a gorgeous land blind as well as a good water blind. We were called back to the fourth and they had a very nice test set up with an honor. If memory serves correctly there were 8 dogs back to the 4th. We were to run in the middle of the pack so good deal. Fred came to the line watched all the birds go down I think the last one he watched from 5 feet in front of me. Received our number and Fred re-heeled and came back and he was off. Fred did a very good job, not perfect but very good. We ended up with a Second place finish that day and I have never been prouder of any dog we have had at that moment. Best part was Pop Pop was with us that weekend and he got to see Freddie beat the brothers on that weekend. We are gonna miss that Big Yellow Dog!! Thanks to everyone who helped make Fred the dog he was. They are all flyers now buddy!!
