Good Catch Dog Rescue We are a small rescue who helps to combat the local stray dog population in South Texas. We're small but we're mighty.

Good Catch Dog Rescue came to fruition after years of living in South Texas and not seeing an end to the overpopulation of unwanted companions. Every dog we've rescued has left us with reason to go back for more and each of them has been deemed a good catch!

Ray is adopted!

He joined us in May alongside his brothers, Cyrus and Leo and their momma, Sunny, after they were found abandoned in a crate on the side of a country road. The 3 pups were just 10 weeks old and for the first couple of months, it was hard to see how Ray was going to make his way into a home. The trust simply wasn’t there yet and that can be a tough sell for someone looking to adopt a puppy.
I’m fairly certain that if he’d had more one-on-one attention early on and a little less time with his siblings, he may have progressed faster. But being a small rescue, we don’t always have the luxury of separating siblings when behavioral issues are involved. Sometimes we have to work within the situation we have and give them the time and space to come around in their own way.
Fast forward to recently, when our friend Jill offered to foster Ray’s brother Leo. Without Leo here, Ray suddenly became far more interested in what we were doing. He began letting his guard down, engaging with us more, and showing a level of curiosity and trust we hadn’t seen before. His progress was exponential, and it finally felt like we were getting to see the dog that had been hiding underneath all that uncertainty.
That shift ultimately made him the perfect addition to his new family. Next week, Ray will leave here on the Freedom Run Express van and begin his life as a chosen companion, something he has deserved since day one. ❤️

Aster photo dump! Today is her 5 month birthday! She’s kind, patient, calm, gentle and observant. Pretty much a carbon copy of her momma Gloria in nature.
Her foster mom Kris has the gift for taking good pup pictures. She says it’s all in the cheese, I think it’s all in the skills!

This boy is a survivor!!! He’s healing wonderfully from surgery and has zero interest in his incision, so we’re officially past the “donut” stage. He’ll be on meds for another 10 days and, for now, is happily enjoying his canned food and soaked kibble diet.
He’s also starting to pick up on our routine, although bedtime is still a bit of an event. Sid causes quite the commotion when it’s time to head to the laundry room for the night. We’re slowly working on crate training by starting there, but this fella would much rather be by his person’s side 24/7. Crate training is really only necessary while he’s here so he’ll be prepared for possible transport if he isn’t adopted locally. Otherwise, Sid has done very well having free run of the house with his foster siblings. He simply doesn’t like being alone.
He’s not much of a toy guy. His favorite indoor activity is laying right beside you. Outside, though, he’s a busy boy checking every corner of the yard and investigating all the new smells.
His parrot mouth might be one of my favorite things about him. When he rolls onto his back and shows off those little teefers, you can’t help but smile. Eating can be a little tricky because he’s trying to scoop food with a shorter bottom jaw, so sometimes I’ll hold his bowl at an angle to help him get the job done.
He appears to be housetrained. He’s had a couple of accidents while wearing his belly bands, which I’ve kept on him while he heals, but I’m chalking those up to the two of us not being completely on the same schedule just yet.
Sid is definitely a dog for someone who has time to give him the companionship he craves. He’s not a latchkey kind of dog who will be happy waiting alone all day for his loving. He’d do well with other small dogs. He isn’t afraid of the big dogs, but their style of play just isn’t quite the same as his.
Cats are fine too, as long as they don’t pester him. He’ll give a little grunt if one gets too far into his personal space, (Carlos tested that theory), but otherwise, he’s completely unfazed.
At only 7 years old, Sid has many years ahead of him to serve as someone’s loyal shadow and personal heat source. He prefers sleeping under the covers if you’ll let him and once he’s tucked in, he’ll stay there all night without a peep.

We love Sid, and we already know his future forever person will too.

Leo (5½ months, 25 lbs.) is now with his new foster mom, Jill, who is also fostering COTA (1 year, 20lbs). Both boys were very bonded with their brothers, Leo with Ray and COTA with Elroy, but we needed to see who they are individually so we can help them find the right homes.
Leo and Ray came to Good Catch back in May with their mom, Sunny and brother Cyrus. Leo and Ray are the last of their family still waiting for homes, and they are so deserving of the chance to be more than just one of many, as they’ve been for much of their time in rescue.
Leo is fully vetted, and COTA will be once he has healed from his broken pelvis.
We’re excited for Jill’s skills to help find Leo his family.

Fun fact! In addition to all of the normal expenses that come with running a rescue, we also pay yearly subscription fees for services that help us verify things like background information and property ownership.
Why? Because every so often, an applicant will claim to own a home when they’re actually renting. 🚩🚩🚩
Renting absolutely does not disqualify someone from adopting, but honesty matters. If you rent, please have a conversation with your landlord before taking the giant leap of adopting a dog and be upfront with us about your living situation.
Our job is to make sure every dog we place is going into a home where they are truly welcome and allowed to stay. The last thing anyone wants is for a dog to be returned or displaced because a landlord never approved the adoption.
A little honesty and communication up front can prevent a whole lot of heartbreak later.
