🐾 WAITING FOR A KITTEN? WELL, LET'S TALK ABOUT HOW FAST "KITTEN" REALLY GOES! 🐾
We hear it all the time from potential adopters:
“I'm waiting for a kitten!”
We completely understand. Kittens are tiny, adorable, playful little balls of chaos. ❤️ But something many people don't realize is just how short the kitten stage actually is.
A cat is only considered a kitten for approximately the first 6 months of life. After that comes the teenage/adolescent stage, and by around a year old, you're looking at a young adult.
Here's where that timeline gets interesting.
Kittens should remain with their mama until they're at least 8 weeks old. Those first two months are important for nursing, development, socialization and learning how to be a cat.
At DCS Feline Fixers, our kittens also must reach approximately 3 pounds before being spayed or neutered. Most reach that around 4 months old, although every kitten grows at their own pace.
By the time one of our kittens is ready to go home, they have been growing, learning and receiving the veterinary care they need for several months already.
So that teeny-tiny kitten stage everyone is waiting for?
It goes FAST. 💨🐱
And then comes something we wish more people would consider...
❤️ DON'T OVERLOOK THE TEENAGERS AND ADULTS!
A 6-month-old cat didn't suddenly stop being playful yesterday.
A 1-year-old didn't receive a memo saying, “Congratulations. You're an adult now. Please surrender all toys and report to the couch.” 😂
Our teenagers and young adults can still be silly, playful, curious and energetic. The wonderful difference is that their personalities are becoming easier to see.
And personality matters.
Sometimes you see a picture of a beautiful cat and immediately think:
“THAT'S THE ONE!”
And maybe it is!
But sometimes the cat you fall in love with from a photograph isn't necessarily the cat whose personality is the best match for your home.
That's why we encourage people to keep an open mind. Pick a few cats you're interested in and come meet them! You may walk in thinking you're there for one cat and discover that another has already decided you're their person. ❤️
🐾 HOW OUR ADOPTION PROCESS WORKS
DCS Feline Fixers does not operate on a “first application gets the cat” basis.
Every application is reviewed.
Sometimes we receive several applications for the same kitten or cat. When that happens, we look at each application and choose the home we believe will be the best fit for that individual cat's personality, needs and long-term happiness.
It isn't about who applied five minutes earlier.
It's about making the right match.
And if the cat you originally applied for isn't the best fit, that doesn't necessarily mean there isn't another wonderful cat waiting here who is.
🐱🐱 AND YES... WE LOVE PAIR ADOPTIONS!
If you've been considering two, please don't be afraid to ask us about adopting a pair.
When compatible cats or kittens go home together, they already have a familiar friend during what can otherwise be a very big transition. They can play together, comfort one another and have companionship while adjusting to their new surroundings.
And, of course, adopting two also means two cats get their forever homes and two spaces open for us to help cats who are still waiting. ❤️
💙 NOW LET'S TALK ABOUT THAT $75 ADOPTION FEE...
Our adoption fee is just $75, and your new family member comes to you having already received veterinary care that would cost considerably more if you were paying for each service individually.
Our adoptable cats receive:
🐾 Spay or neuter
🐾 Veterinary examination
🐾 Age-appropriate vaccinations
🐾 Flea treatment
🐾 Deworming
🐾 Microchip
🐾 Appropriate testing
We typically have approximately $150-$250 or more invested in each cat or kitten before adoption.
That $75 adoption fee doesn't come close to reimbursing the rescue for what we've spent. It simply helps us continue doing it for the next one.
A “free kitten” may not have an adoption fee, but spay/neuter, vaccines, testing, parasite treatment, microchipping and veterinary examinations certainly aren't free.
❤️ SO... ARE YOU STILL WAITING FOR A KITTEN?
Maybe the kitten you're waiting for is already here.
Or maybe your cat is Edie.
Maybe it's Dori.
Maybe Dinero, Cyrus, Caviar, Creech or Caliope that has been waiting for someone exactly like you.
And maybe there's a certain one-eyed Captain wondering why nobody has taken him home yet. 😉🏴☠️🐾
Don't choose your next family member by age or photograph alone.
Schedule an appointment to meet them.
Learn their personalities.
Give the teenagers a chance.
Give the adults a chance.
And maybe even give two a chance. ❤️
Because the goal isn't simply to adopt a cat.
It's to find YOUR cat.
