Throwback to Harley, my first project dog who crossed over last summer. 🌈

I learned a lot about building trust with a dog, losing it, and spending a decade rebuilding it while he lived with my folks instead. Also the value of conditioning basket muzzles.

I also got a taste of the Belgian fever - Harley was something like a Malinois X Greyhound and could literally do it all. Treibball, RallyO, lure coursing, cross country, bike joring, agility, nose work, bite work, obedience, SAR style air scenting, crazy ball drive, frisbee, tricks, and the hardest thing for him to accomplish was a CGC and succeeding at the standard ‘life exercises’ of the Schutzhund BH.

He’d redirect and give category 4 bites and needed behavior rehabilitation at a year old. No one could touch him.

I brought him home to my folks house, just a young trainer-pup myself and said “just 3 days, Dad! Also don’t look him in the eye!!” To my surprise Harley played ball with my dad that day instead of biting him, and he ended up adopting my mom and dad and stayed back at home after I moved out on my own a year later and lived out his days there. 🩷

Ohhhh snap. If you haven’t heard Leah’s story, allow me to introduce you. Rescued in 2023. She’s now around 4 years old and defines the meaning of nanny dog. 🐕 Watch to the end 😁

Swipe to see puppy play behavior progression with Dutchess the Dutch Shepherd and Auto Magic “Otto” the German Shepherd. Day 1 was mostly behavior and play evaluation. Behind the scenes puppies are kept completely separate and trained individually and around or with assigned and rotated mentor dogs. Training and focus around each other and together without direct interaction is the main game currently, with walks together also now added. No direct play was allowed for the first month for the most part. Both dogs are persistent and driven coming from strong lines and breeds. Otto can be obnoxious with other puppies and dogs and doesn’t naturally take cues or learn from them without a large enough consequence. Dutchess had a difficult early litter experience as the runt and has been building confidence around other dogs and also working on channeling her hunt drive for the ‘fluffy white dog-shaped bunny’ into toys and other skills. Both puppies go to weekly AKC STAR class with my favorite company in Austin I use for my own dogs’ practice. They are now allowed brief supervised play time to allow for learning self-control, reading other dogs and each other, calling off and redirecting, and practicing fine tuning bite inhibition and bite control. My ultimate goal is reaching neutrality with each other for home harmony and hopefully retain future safety and reliability around each other and the family pack and humans as they mature into the next developmental stages.

“The very act of observation changes the outcome.”
I have tried AI glasses but my walk is apparently so jaunty it comes out looking like I am bobbing my head from side to side and is nauseating to watch 😂
