Highland Lakes Canine Rescue The Highland Lakes Canine Rescue operates in the Texas Hill Country outside of Austin, TX. HLCR is a private 501(c)3 no-kill rescue serving Central Texas.

We're a no-kill dog rescue in the Texas Hill Country dedicated to saving the most vulnerable dogs: those abandoned, neglected, or medically critical in shelters across Central Texas. Our mission is simple: rescue, rehabilitate, and find them loving forever homes. On our 15-acre sanctuary, a passionate team of staff and volunteers provides comprehensive medical care, proper nutrition, exercise, socialization, and training. But most importantly, we give each dog what they've been missing: attention, compassion, and unconditional love. We're proudly powered by donations alone and deeply grateful for every contribution that helps us continue this work. As neighbors and partners in our community, we're committed to making a difference, one dog at a time. Follow our rescue journeys on Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, Pinterest, and be sure to like our page for updates, success stories, and ways to get involved. Read out blog, see upcoming events, and find educational resources at www.hlcr.org. Thank you for supporting our mission!

“Far and away the best prize that life offers is the chance to work hard at work worth doing.” -Theodore Roosevelt, Labor Day address, 1903.

Last week, an incredible group of Burnet High School students came out to the shelter ready to work. They scrubbed water troughs, brought order to cabinets and shelves, and gave our doghouses a fresh coat of paint. Between chores, the students learned about HLCR’s history, our mission, and what advocating for animal welfare looks like in real time. They also spent valuable time giving (and receiving) attention from our dogs!

Today, we want to extend a great big thank you to them. The doghouses look brand new, the cabinets finally make sense, and several dogs have added new names to their list of favorite people. Perhaps best of all, these young people demonstrated what can be accomplished by those who show up with a determined heart to do the right thing.

682 days and counting. Why? Your guess is as good as ours…

Delgato is a three-year-old German Shepherd who came to us from New Braunfels heartworm positive and finished treatment fully healthy. He’s calm, easy to walk, knows his basic commands, and loves kids and most other animals. Basically, if they’re cool, he’s cool. Puppies and small dogs are his favorites, which is how he earned the title of Uncle Del. He’s a gentle guy who loves a good game of keep away, as you can see in this video. He also loves water and will happily jump in the pool or lake with you!

Del rarely barks at people or his furry friends, but he’s not a super fan of pushy or loud dogs, so he’d do best in a calm home where any canine siblings are polite and easygoing. He’s the total package: playful, loving, smart, athletic but not hyper, and really just an all-around fantastic companion.

Delgato is neutered, microchipped, current on preventatives, and ready to go home today. After so long in the shelter, he’s ready to find his forever home with a battle buddy that just gets it.

Highland Lakes Canine Rescue is located outside of Marble Falls, Texas about an hour west of Austin. Learn more and apply to adopt Delgato at www.hlcr.org/adoptable-dogs/delgato or by calling/texting 830-693-0569.

As much as we love Del, we really want him to high-tail it out of here already. Please share this post so this very good boy can finally find his person!

Happy Adoption Day to Beasley and Bugs! 🥳🥳🥳

Beasley is a senior Great Pyrenees, and what she wanted most at this stage of life wasn’t adventure. It was a steady routine and a familiar place to land. One of our staff members took her home while we searched for her adopter, so she spent the wait in a real home instead of wondering what came next. Now she has a person of her own, one who loves her to the moon and back.

Bugs came to us last July with a nasty skin infection that took awhile to heal. Once she was better, foster care handled the rest of her education: manners, house rules, and the fine art of being a good houseguest. Last month she found her perfect people, along with a new brother who is also quite adorable, just like sweet Bugs.

Adoptions have picked up lately, and that’s no accident. Every share, every “you have to see this dog” to a friend, every time you spoke up for one of our pups put them in front of someone new. We want to thank you for being part of their stories.

If you or someone you know is looking for a new best friend, there are more dogs waiting for their very own happy adoption day! Find them at hlcr.org ♥️🐾

TJ arrived small, badly hurt, and still a total sweetheart despite those challenges.

After an apparent animal attack left him with a punctured abdominal wall and a maimed paw, TJ came to HLCR to recuperate with the TLC he needs from our dedicated staff and volunteers. Since then, he has handled daily bandage changes, a cone, and a great deal of pain and fussing with more grace than most of us manage on any given Tuesday.

Join us as we share TJ’s story, how he’s doing now, and what comes next. TJ will be on camera too, offering his own commentary.

His care came to $1,600.48 from our medical fund, the fund that lets us say yes to dogs like him. Help us refill it by Thursday, October 15th, so we’re ready for the next one.

Thanks to Jeannette Murphy and a generous friend who prefers to stay anonymous, gifts are matched up to $500. Your gift counts twice! Find ways to donate in the pinned comment. Can’t give right now? Share this video. TJ’s next supporter might be on your friends list.

Rescue. Rehabilitate. Rehome. That's the HLCR way! 🐾
