In observance of , here are our top 4 Rabies safety tips:

Keep your pet up to date with Rabies vaccines. The law varies by location, so ask your veterinarian.

If you see an animal known to carry Rabies acting abnormally or in contact with your pet, call animal control immediately. Do not handle the wild animal or risk getting bitten yourself.

If you or your pet has been exposed, contact your personal health care provider and your veterinarian immediately. Time is critical after exposure to prevent infection and death!

Bats are the leading cause of human rabies death in the United States, being responsible for more than 7 out of 10 fatal US rabies cases. Never handle bats or other wild animals as exposure can occur even if bites or scratches aren't visible. If you encounter a bat in your home, yard, or other area that would expose humans or pets, please call your local animal control and report the incident.

🐰 Happy International Rabbit Day! 🐰

Today, we’re celebrating all the wonderful rabbits who bring so much personality, intelligence, and joy to our lives! 💕🐇

International Rabbit Day began in 1998 through The Rabbit Charity in the UK. It’s a great opportunity to celebrate rabbits as pets while also highlighting the commitment and specialized care they require.

🐇 Did you know?
Rabbits are intelligent, social animals that can live 6–10 years and often thrive when housed with a compatible rabbit companion.

🏡 Rabbit Husbandry Basics:
• Rabbits need large, safe enclosures with plenty of time outside their cage to exercise, explore, and play.
• As a prey species, rabbits benefit from having a secure space where they can retreat when they feel nervous or threatened.
• Many rabbits can be litter-box trained! Paper-based or straw-based litter are good options.
• A proper, species-appropriate diet is essential. Rabbits have continuously growing teeth, and an inappropriate diet can contribute to serious dental disease. 🦷🌿
• Regular veterinary care with a veterinarian experienced in exotic pets is an important part of keeping your bunny healthy.

Rabbits can make amazing companions, but they are a long-term commitment with very specific housing, dietary, social, and medical needs. ❤️

🐾 Is your pet slowing down—or just getting older? 🐾

Did you know pets are experts at hiding pain? Subtle changes like slowing down on walks, hesitating to jump, having trouble with stairs, sleeping more, or simply seeming “a little different” can all be signs that your pet may be uncomfortable.

💜 Pain shouldn’t be considered a normal part of aging. Whether your pet is dealing with arthritis or another chronic condition, there are treatment options that can help improve comfort, mobility, and quality of life.

September is Animal Pain Awareness Month, making it the perfect time to take a closer look at your pet’s comfort and mobility.

✨ Through October, MVH is offering special discounts on Solensia® and Librela® for qualifying patients. These monthly treatments can help manage osteoarthritis pain and may help your pet get back to doing the things they love—whether that’s chasing toys, climbing stairs, going for walks, or simply enjoying life with their favorite people. 🐶

If you’ve noticed your pet slowing down or showing changes in mobility, talk with our veterinary team. Your pet may be telling you they need a little extra help—you just have to know what to look for. 🐱

If it's confirmed that your pet has been affected by this microbial parasite, it’s likely that a broad spectrum anti-parasitic will be prescribed. Additional medication may be recommended to help with dehydration and diarrhea, along with taking steps to ensure that you and your pet’s home environment is parasite-free. Did you know that we perform surgery on exotic species, too? 🦎🐢🦜

Our surgical team cares for more than just cats and dogs — we’re proud to provide veterinary care for the unique reptiles, birds, and other exotic pets that call the Florida Keys home.

Last week, Dr. SEA performed a hindlimb amputation on this red-footed tortoise named Edge, who was brought to us by the Florida Keys SPCA after being hit by a car.

His injuries were fortunately limited to his shell and one hindlimb, but the damage to the leg was severe enough that amputation was the best option to give him a comfortable, functional future. While an amputation like this would not be a viable option for a wild tortoise that needs all four limbs to survive and thrive in the wild, this little guy will not be returning to the wild. In his situation, removing the severely injured limb gives him the best chance at a good quality of life.

Swipe through to see some photos of this special patient, along with his pre- and post-operative X-rays showing the fracture that led to surgery.

The best part? He started eating on his own just two days after surgery! 🐢❤️ Now, we’re hoping he continues to have a smooth recovery and, once he’s fully healed, a long, happy, and healthy life with his future adoptive family.

A huge thank you to the Florida Keys SPCA for getting this little guy the care he needed! 🥰

Did you know today is World Su***de Prevention Day? Our Team at MVH is wearing purple and teal to remind one another that you are not alone, your mental health matters, and it’s okay to ask for help. 💜💚🩵

Veterinary medicine is a rewarding profession, but it can also be incredibly demanding. The emotional weight of caring for sick and injured animals, supporting grieving families, long hours, compassion fatigue, and the pressures of the job can take a toll. Organizations like NOMV (Not One More Vet) are working to support veterinary professionals and remind us that asking for help is a sign of strength—not weakness. Not One More Vet, Inc

This message goes far beyond veterinary medicine. Every industry has its own pressures, and every person deserves support. Whether you're a veterinarian, vet tech, teacher, first responder, healthcare worker, business professional, tradesperson, student, parent, or simply someone having a difficult time—you don't have to face it alone.

💜 If you or someone you know is struggling:

📞 Call or text 988 — Su***de & Crisis Lifeline
💬 Text HOME to 741741 — Crisis Text Line
🐾 NOMV Peer Support — Resources specifically for veterinary professionals
📞 Veterans Crisis Line: Call 988, then press 1

If you’re worried about someone, reach out. Listen. Check in. Sometimes a simple “Are you okay?” can make a bigger difference than you realize.

There is hope. There is help. You matter. 💜
