Fear isn’t always overcome by removing the scary thing.
Sometimes it’s overcome by changing what it means.
As trainers, we often want to remove the threat altogether, but instead of teaching horses to simply tolerate it, we want to make it their idea to explore.
What once felt threatening becomes something to explore. What once created tension begins to soften. What once inspired avoidance slowly becomes something you can trust.
From fear to curiosity. From tension to relaxation. From avoidance to trust.
The whip didn’t change. His understanding of it did.

When the halter comes off, the progress speaks for itself.

This horse wasn’t always willing, soft, or attentive. There were moments of distraction, resistance, uncertainty, and trying to disconnect from the work. But piece by piece, consistency turned into trust — and trust turned into partnership.

Now every turn, backup, and forehand movement happens without ropes or force. Just communication, attentiveness, and a horse choosing to stay connected.

For me, groundwork has never been about control. It’s about calming the mind, building teamwork, and creating a horse that feels safe enough to stay with you willingly. The strongest partnerships don’t start in the saddle — they start on the ground. 🤍

Setback or setup? You decide.

Today my horse pulled back three times and snapped lead ropes like they were thread. Old me might’ve pushed through, tied harder, or called it a “bad day.”

Not this time.

We took a step back — straight to the round pen.Reset the mind. Reset the feet. Reset the conversation.

No tying. No pressure traps. Just movement, softness, and clarity.

And then? We saddled without being tied at all.Quiet. Connected. Willing.

That’s the difference between forcing a horse to stand… and teaching one to want to.

Training isn’t linear. It’s listening. It’s knowing when to slow down so you can actually move forward.

Bumo and I have been working daily for about 10 consistent days on moving the hind quarters around the forehand and the forehand around the hind quarters separately.

Obviously not flawless but since the last post he has come a long way. Consistency is key, alongside keeping them focused and challenged during sessions. Ever heard a tired dog is a good dog? Same for horses and this DOES NOT always pertain to physical tiredness. In fact, i refrain from too much “excessive endurance” in the round pen. It’s important to slow down and get foundations, not build endurance for a horse that can’t control it.

I’ve been working and perfecting asking him and allowing him to acknowledge his feet, how to move them and what to do when qued. This can act as a safety measure if a horse takes off for example; calming the mind and controlling the feet not fighting with them. Allow them to succeed not run out till they have no more energy to misbehave.

This is a horse i rescued on February 11, 2026 from the Florence feedlot. He is an aprx 15 month old Rez c**t.

I have not worked with him very much since I’ve taken him in due to him quarantining.

Although he has been very confident and willing to try new things when they are shown to him. This clip is a blip of our first proper trailer load. I am beyond proud of how brave he was to endure such a scary thing on his own!

As us horse people know horses can be dangerous in all sizes at any time; my main focus having this in mind due to lack of exposure in his training journey thus far.

I made sure to understand his mechanisms are a little pushy so i wanted to help his mind use his confidence in productive ways. This is demonstrated such as letting HIM get the idea the trailer is a cool place to be and wanting to explore. I was totally prepared to be here for an hour helping him make the choice. Although he was phenomenal, i have had many horses turn this into what can look or be dangerous.

With that said, he was very trusting. With horses my goal is to help them make the decision themselves when opted an opportunity. (Guiding the correct one of course). I’ve learned this through working with a lot of “baby sat” horses. I want him to use his confidence to make good choices! Even starting at the small ones!!

Making a safe spot for a horse is huge, they are programmed flight, prey and herd animals. With not knowing him very well we trusted one another and make a safe and educational learning experience!!

The “firsts” with horses is so important, it shapes their thought of each event. Using encouragement, patience, and confidence we became a team and learned a new skill. Very proud.

Horses are interesting and trusting animals. Bring it out in each one looks so different, but is so rewarding and conversational, even without speaking.

Bumo is learning to move his shoulders around the hind end. He had a phenomenal pivot around the shoulders with the hind end but struggles to slow the hind end to move his shoulders independently.

Horses motor is the hind end; the directional control, balance and steering is the front end.

Working on moving the horses different body parts, gaining confidence and self awareness control (for the horse) helps gain a better relationship.

Even though starting to ask for a new que might look ugly, baby steps in the right direction hold foundational aspects. This is the first time this has been asked of him. (Just a blip of what the sessions looked like).

Every time you take your horse out you’re training it. I focus on remembering that because i tend to get hard on myself for not “riding everyday”. It’s not all about riding. It’s about groundwork, foundations, building blocks and consistency because without it you can’t ride. Even doing “simple” exercises helps you and your horse!
