Dog of the Month - Leia
(the story is from her mom):
We adopted Leia, a 7-month-old Pitbull/American Staffordshire Terrier mix, from PACC in July of 2025 and immediately recognized she needed training to get to a place where she could fully integrate into the household (an older Mini Aussie and 2 Bengal cats). So we called Sol Dog and began training.
We went through many months of anxiety worrying if we made a mistake adopting her, but we worked with Leia every day at home, took both dogs on daily walks together, and made slow, stuttering progress.
If it hadn't been for one of our Bengal cats, Loki, we might have re-homed Leia. But shortly after we brought her home, our cat decided Leia was his best friend, and no baby gate was going to keep Loki from Leia. Seeing their friendship gave us hope and the will to keep working with her.
We knew we needed some sort of boarding option for Leia because we weren't confident a regular pet sitter would be able to handle the full household.
We discussed this with trainer-Celeste and she told us that Sol Dog could provide a safe and quiet space and help reduce her stress around other dogs. We started to practice overnight stays.
We were encouraged to hear though initially nervous, her nervousness steadily decreased. Don, Sol Dog's boarding lead, made it his mission to make friends with Leia and played with her in the yard.
We also had short training sessions while she was boarded. She now boards at Sol Dog regularly, even if it's just for a night or two.
We’re grateful Sol Dog offers options for dogs with high-anxiety and reactivity, as well as manage her medications schedule, so we know she's in good hands. Whenever she stays, she spends her time calm, happy, playful, and enjoys spending time with the staff.
A year+ later, she's now a fully integrated member of the household, but Loki will always be her special friend. We're grateful for Sol Dog every day because she's the BEST snuggler and has much love to share - no one escapes Leia kisses!
We still work on training - especially agility work. We've learned just how intelligent she is, she loves any brain game or puzzle. If we're not careful, she'll be taking her LSATs next!
