Let's talk about heartworm. Not in a scary way. In a 'you need to know this' way. Here's the reality: Heartworm season doesn't wait for summer.

It starts now. In June. When mosquitoes become active. And if you're thinking 'my pet is mostly indoors' or 'heartworm isn't common in my area' or 'I'll start prevention next month' β€” we need to talk.

HERE'S WHAT HEARTWORM IS: Heartworm is a parasite spread by mosquitoes. One infected mosquito bite = one heartworm larva in your pet's bloodstream.

That larva grows into an adult worm (sometimes MULTIPLE worms) that lives in the heart and lungs.

Sounds bad? It is. But it's also completely preventable.

HERE'S WHY MAY IS CRITICAL:
β†’ Heartworm prevention needs to START before mosquito season (now)
β†’ Starting prevention after exposure = too late
β†’ A missed dose in May = a whole month of zero protection
β†’ Even ONE mosquito bite in an unprotected month could infect your pet.

HERE'S THE GOOD NEWS: Prevention is simple, affordable, and 99%+ effective. Options include monthly tablets, monthly injections, or annual injections, depending on what works for your pet.

IF YOUR PET ISN'T ON PREVENTION YET: Don't wait another month. Call us today.

We can start your pet immediately and make sure they're protected all season long.

If your pet IS on prevention: great! Keep it up consistently β€” no skipping months, even if you think it's safe.

This isn't complicated. It's preventable. And prevention is way easier (and cheaper) than treatment. Let's protect your pet. πŸ’™

Summer heat is NO JOKE. 🌑️

And if you're not already thinking about heat safety for your pet, now's the time.

Here's what happens: When temps hit the mid-80s and beyond, your pet's body struggles to cool down.

They can't sweat as we do.

One hour in a hot car? Dangerous.

A midday walk on pavement? Can burn their paws AND overheat them.

Outdoor activities without breaks and water? Risk of heat exhaustion or heat stroke. Heat stroke isn't a maybe. It's a medical emergency.

If you notice signs of heat stress, don't wait. Bring your pet in. Heat stroke can be life-threatening, but it's also preventable. Stay safe out there. Your pet is counting on you.

πŸ’š Who's Who Wednesday πŸ’š

This week we're celebrating Cayle β€” the kind of person who spends her vacation flying to Ukraine to help animals in need. When she's not being an incredible LVT here at Pine Tree, you'll find her hiking with her golden retriever Douglas Fur 🐢 (yes, that's really his name and we love it). We're so lucky to have her!

Memorial Day weekend is here. Summer is officially starting. And if you're hitting the road or spending more time outdoors with your pet, we want to make sure you're ready. We've talked about travel prep, prevention, and summer allergies all month.

But here's one final check-in before you go into full summer mode:

FINAL SUMMER PREP CHECKLIST:
☐ Current on parasite prevention (all pets?)
☐ ID tags and microchip info updated
☐ Recent photos of pets (for emergencies)
☐ Vet records accessible (if traveling)
☐ Emergency vet numbers in your phone
☐ Heat tolerance plan (how will you keep them cool?)
☐ Water plan (always have fresh, cool water)

Print this. Refrigerate it. Share it with anyone pet-sitting for you.

One last thought: if you've been meaning to schedule that wellness visit before summer gets crazy, this weekend is your last chance to get on the books before peak season hits.

We're ready when you are. Have an amazing (and safe!) summer with your pet. πŸ’š

Spring allergies were rough on your pup. But summer allergies?

They're a whole different beast. 🌑️

Here's what changes when temperatures rise:

SPRING ALLERGIES (pollen, mold): β†’ Seasonal (they come and go) β†’ Worse on high-pollen days β†’ Often controlled with medication + management

SUMMER ALLERGIES (heat, humidity, increased outdoor time): β†’ Can get WORSE β†’ Moisture = more yeast growth on skin β†’ More outdoor exposure = more allergen exposure β†’ Can trigger bacterial skin infections on top of allergies

The good news? If we start preparing NOW, we can prevent summer from becoming a scratching nightmare.

Here's what we recommend:
βœ” A skin check during a wellness exam (catch early issues)
βœ” Discuss allergy management options (meds, shampoos, supplements)
βœ” Plan for regular nail trims (scratching can cause secondary infections)
βœ” Consider paw soaks or regular baths to remove allergens. Summer allergies are real, but they're manageable.

Let's get ahead of it. Book your pet's summer allergy check at Pine Tree Veterinary Hospital today. πŸ’š

Spring allergies were one thing. But now we need to talk about something more serious: ticks.

Tick season doesn't start in summer. It starts NOW. Early May. And if you're not already protecting your pet, you're already behind.

Here's why ticks are a big deal:

TICKS CAN CARRY:
β†’ Lyme disease (lameness, joint pain, can become chronic)
β†’ Ehrlichiosis (fever, lethargy, serious if untreated)
β†’ Anaplasmosis (similar symptoms to Lyme)
β†’ Rocky Mountain spotted fever (can be fatal)
β†’ Babesiosis (affects red blood cells) ONE tick bite can change everything.

THE GOOD NEWS: Prevention is simple, affordable, and 99%+ effective.

HERE'S WHAT WE RECOMMEND:
βœ” Check your pet DAILY for ticks (especially after outdoor time)
βœ” Use veterinary-recommended tick prevention (not the pet store stuff β€” it doesn't work)
βœ” Avoid tick-heavy areas when possible (tall grass, woods, brush)
βœ” Consider a Lyme disease vaccine if you live in a high-risk area Don't wait.

Don't take chances. Start or update your pet's tick prevention TODAY. We've got options for every budget and lifestyle. Let's talk. πŸ’š

Summer's almost here. 🌞

Before your pet goes on their big adventure, here's what we check during a pre-summer wellness exam.

It's not just a 'your pet looks healthy' visit.

We're checking EVERYTHING to make sure they're ready for heat, activity, and the unexpected.

WHAT WE CHECK:
β†’ Heart and lungs (especially important before increased activity)
β†’ Weight and body condition (carrying extra weight in heat = serious risk)
β†’ Skin and ears (catch allergies or infections early)
β†’ Teeth and gums (dental disease doesn't take summer off)
β†’ Joints and mobility (especially for senior pets doing summer activities)
β†’ Current medications (need refills before travel?)
β†’ Parasite prevention status (this is NON-NEGOTIABLE for summer, your pet doesn't need extra friends!)

This one visit can prevent a lot of problems down the road. Summer adventures are amazing. But they're safer when you start with a wellness check.

Let's get your pet ready. Book at Pine Tree Veterinary Hospital today. πŸ’š
