When good teeth go bad…..
This 5lb chihuahua developed a jaw fracture due to severe dental disease. When teeth become infected, that infection spreads to the jaw and compromises it.
Unfortunately due to the chronicity of this fracture, the rostral portion of the jaw needed removal.
Sunflower will be much more comfortable now and pain free once she heals!
As a PSA—please have professional routine dental cleaning procedures done on your pet annually after the age of 5 years. This is preventable!

More tooth knowledge!! 🦷

Why is that tooth purple? Every tooth has a blood supply and a nerve in the middle of the tooth located in the pulp canal. When the pulp is diseased it is called endodontic disease. Endodontic disease is a painful condition that can lead to abscess around tooth roots, bone infection, or draining tracts. 93% of these teeth are non vital and need root canal therapy or extraction.

Let’s talk tooth fractures:
This is called a slab fracture of the biggest upper molar in a dog‘s mouth. This fracture is exposing the pulp cavity and is not only very painful, it is at high risk for a tooth or abscess. The most common cause for this type of fracture is from chewing on bones, antlers, and Nyla bones.

These red lesions are called rodent ulcers (aka eosinophilic granulomas).
The most common cause is due to underlying allergies.
If your cat has these or licks himself a lot to the point of thin hair, we should talk!
