Thank you to everyone who signed up or was interested in signing up for our kitten yoga on Sunday (6/28)! Unfortunately, given the viral illnesses amongst our cats and kittens at the shelter, we will be unable to have the Kitten Yoga class this Sunday. We are incredibly sorry for having to cancel, but the health and wellbeing of our feline friends is our priority at this time. Thank you for understanding!♥️🐱

PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT
Immediate Update: Feline Illnesses Surfaced at Outer Banks SPCA

The Outer Banks SPCA has recently identified several illnesses impacting the kittens and cats here at our shelter. Since mid-June, kittens began showing symptoms such as lethargy, unsteadiness in their movement, diarrhea, and general signs of weakness. While the actual illnesses have yet to be determined, extensive veterinary consultation and laboratory testing indicates the illnesses to be viral in nature.

Temporary Shelter Closures:
In order to ensure that we are only placing healthy cats and kittens up for adoption, the SPCA will be closing our cat rooms to the public for the remainder of the week. During this time, we will not allow visitors in the cat rooms, and we will temporarily pause all cat intakes and adoptions. The SPCA will reevaluate the situation this coming Monday and provide further updates.

To help protect the pets in our community, please follow these important guidelines any time you choose to bring a new pet into your home from any source:

• Vaccinate Immediately: It is extremely important to vaccinate cats and kittens of all ages. If you have recently brought a new kitten into your home, please start its vaccine series immediately. Please schedule a visit with your veterinarian if your pet is not current on its vaccines.

• Quarantine New Additions: Keeping new pets separate from established pets and slowly introducing them is the best way to make sure everyone stays healthy and bonds well.

• Watch for Symptoms: If you have a cat under six months old that begins acting lethargic, unsteady, has diarrhea, or any other signs of weakness, please take them to your veterinarian immediately.

🐾 Foster Homes Needed for Socialization! 🐾

We have several kittens who are looking for temporary foster homes to help them learn that people can be pretty great! These little ones are safe and healthy, but they need extra love, patience, and positive interactions to build their confidence and become the happy, social cats we know they can be.

Fostering helps kittens:
🐱 Learn to trust people
🐱 Experience a home environment
🐱 Become more adoptable
🐱 Receive one-on-one attention they can’t always get in a shelter setting

All it takes is a little time, patience, and lots of love. Watching a shy kitten come out of their shell is one of the most rewarding experiences!

If you’re interested in fostering or would like more information, please email our foster coordinator [email protected]. These babies would love a chance to grow and thrive in a home environment. ❤️

Introducing our June Alumni Spotlight✨Scarlett✨

Leighanna knew that Scarlett was the perfect match for her family after they took her out to play in our yard here at the shelter! Scarlett was “playful enough to rough around with dad, but loving enough to curl up with mom at the end of the day.” Thank you, Leighanna for giving this sweet girl a loving home🐾♥️

We love hearing updates on our former shelter residents! If you’d like to submit your alumni for a future spotlight, click the link in our bio or copy the link below to fill out our survey!

Meet Mouse 💙

Don’t let his appearance fool you, Mouse is one of the sweetest cats you’ll ever meet.

Mouse is blind due to ruptured eyes, but he doesn’t let that stop him from enjoying life. He quickly learns his surroundings and happily navigates toward the things he loves most: food, affection, and people.

This special boy absolutely adores head rubs, gentle pets, and any extra attention he can get. He has a gentle, loving personality and melts into your touch. One of his favorite things in the world is mealtime, and he’ll never turn down a tasty snack.

Mouse may not be able to see you, but he’ll know your voice, your touch, and your love. All he’s looking for is a family willing to look past his disabilities and see the wonderful cat he truly is.

He has been through so much and deserves a soft bed, a full food bowl, and a home where he can finally be cherished forever.

🐾 Our Kennels Are Full — Our Hearts Are Hopeful 🐾

Right now, every kennel in our shelter is occupied by a dog waiting for a family to call their own. Some have been waiting far too long for someone to see how special they are. If you’ve been thinking about adding a furry friend to your family, now is the perfect time to visit. By adopting, you’re not only changing the life of the dog you take home—you’re also creating space for another animal in need.

If you can’t adopt right now, you can still make a huge difference! Consider fostering a dog for a day and take them out into the community. A car ride, a walk around town, or even a pup cup outing helps dogs get seen by potential adopters and gives them a much-needed break from the shelter. Sometimes all it takes is one share, one outing, or one introduction to connect a dog with their forever family.

Help us turn full kennels into happy endings 🤍
