Elevated Fire Danger Today
Burning season ended on May 1. Open burning of yard debris is no longer permitted.
Dry conditions and wind can allow a small fire to spread quickly. Please use extra caution with smoking materials, grilling, fire pits, chimineas, and other outdoor heat sources.
Cooking and recreational fires are allowed at single-family homes without a special permit, but they must follow Massachusetts fire and environmental regulations.
Please remember:
• Fires must be small and manageable, no larger than 3 feet in diameter and 2 feet in height.
• Fires must be attended at all times by a competent person.
• A garden hose connected to a water supply or other fire extinguishing equipment must be readily available.
• Fires must be at least 25 feet away from structures and combustible materials.
• Conditions that could allow the fire to spread must be cleared before ignition.
• Fire pits, chimineas, and recreational fires are not incinerators.
• Do not burn trash, rubbish, leaves, yard waste, painted or stained wood, or construction debris.
• Use only dry seasoned wood, charcoal, or approved fuel.
• Never use gasoline, lighter fluid, or other accelerants to start a fire.
• Do not create a smoke nuisance or health hazard for your neighbors.
If Mansfield Fire receives a complaint about smoke or odor, we will investigate. If needed, you may be instructed to extinguish the fire.
For properties other than single-family homes, grills, hibachis, and similar open flame devices cannot be used on balconies, under overhangs, or within 10 feet of a structure.
Please help keep Mansfield safe. Small actions can quickly lead to large fires.
