🎃👻 Halloween Pet Toxicity Awareness: Keep the Treats for the Trick-or-Treaters! 👻🎃
Halloween is full of fun, costumes, decorations, candy, and plenty of tempting smells—but some of our favorite Halloween goodies can be dangerous or even life-threatening to our pets. 🐶🐱
While you’re enjoying the spooky season, take a few extra precautions to help keep your four-legged family members safe!
🍫 CHOCOLATE
Chocolate is one of the most well-known pet toxins. The darker and more concentrated the chocolate, the greater the potential risk. Chocolate can cause vomiting, diarrhea, restlessness, abnormal heart rhythms, tremors, seizures, and other serious complications. Never intentionally give chocolate to your pet, and keep candy bowls and trick-or-treat bags safely out of reach.
🍬 XYLITOL & SUGAR-FREE PRODUCTS
Some sugar-free candies, gum, baked goods, and other products may contain xylitol, an ingredient that can be extremely dangerous to dogs. Xylitol can cause a rapid drop in blood sugar and, in some cases, serious liver injury. Always check ingredient labels and keep anything containing xylitol away from pets.
🍇 RAISINS & GRAPES
Raisins and grapes can cause serious kidney problems in dogs, and the amount that may cause illness can be unpredictable. Keep raisin-containing treats, baked goods, and snack foods away from curious pets.
🍭 CANDY & WRAPPERS
Even candy that isn't directly toxic can cause problems if eaten in large amounts. Candy wrappers, sticks, and packaging can also create a choking hazard or contribute to an intestinal obstruction. A curious pet can make quick work of an unattended candy bowl!
🧁 HALLOWEEN BAKED GOODS
Cookies, brownies, cakes, and other homemade treats may contain chocolate, raisins, xylitol, or other ingredients that aren't safe for pets. It's best to keep all human desserts away from your pets—even if they give you their best puppy-dog eyes. 🥺
🎃 PUMPKINS & DECORATIONS
Pumpkins themselves are generally safe for pets in appropriate amounts, but large quantities can cause stomach upset. More importantly, keep pets away from candles, electrical cords, glow sticks, small decorations, and anything they could chew or swallow.
🕯️ CANDLES & HALLOWEEN DECOR
Flames and curious pets don't mix! Keep lit candles and other heat sources well out of reach. Battery-operated candles are a safer alternative. Also watch for small decorations that could be swallowed or become lodged in the digestive tract.
🧟 COSTUMES & STRESS
Not every pet enjoys dressing up or having lots of visitors. Make sure costumes don't restrict breathing, movement, hearing, or vision, and never leave a costumed pet unattended. If your pet becomes anxious with doorbells, knocking, strangers, or loud noises, provide them with a quiet, secure space away from the activity.
🚨 WHAT SHOULD YOU DO IF YOUR PET EATS SOMETHING THEY SHOULDN'T?
Don't wait for symptoms to appear before seeking advice. The sooner a potential poisoning is addressed, the more options your veterinary team may have to help.
If your pet has ingested a potentially toxic substance, be prepared to provide information such as:
• What your pet ate
• Approximately how much they ate
• When the ingestion occurred
• Your pet's weight
• The product's packaging or ingredient list, if available
Do not induce vomiting or give your pet home remedies unless specifically instructed to do so by a veterinarian or veterinary poison-control professional. Some substances can cause additional injury if brought back up.
📞 If you suspect your pet has been poisoned, contact your veterinarian or an appropriate pet poison-control service right away. If your pet is unconscious, having seizures, struggling to breathe, or showing other severe symptoms, seek emergency veterinary care immediately.
At Mansfield Animal Clinic, Dr. Dana Nelson, Dr. Maria Gobrial, and our veterinary team want your entire family—including the furry members—to have a safe, happy, and spooky Halloween! 🎃🐾
