Today has been a tough day.
Arya was due to have her litter on Friday, the 17th. She gave all the indications that she was ready. She was nesting and spending time in the baby box. Saturday was the same. Sunday, still no kittens, but cats can deliver up to 7 days after (or before) the due date, so not worried yet. Monday, she wasn't nesting or spending time in the baby box, so a vet appointment was made for this morning, the 21st. Xray showed a single large kitten. Oxytocin was given to induce labor, but unfortunately that did not work. Next step was an emergency C-section. Bad news was discovered during surgery. Arya had an infection of the uterus (called Pyometra). The kitten was born alive, but struggling. The vet tech worked for over 45 minutes to get the kitten's vitals up. Sadly, her heroic efforts were in vain and the kitten passed. Arya is in recovery now and will be on heavy antibiotics to hopefully clear her Pyometra. If that fails, she will be going back into surgery for a spay.
If you are the praying sort, prayers are welcome and needed now. Even if you aren't the type to pray, try to send some positive vibes this way.
