In a recent local magazine, this (not local) article highlights how easy it is to make your own dog food. This is not a board certified vet nutritionist and this recipe is not balanced. Please do not use this recipe.

We understand the growing interest in making your own pet food. There are some websites that are "vetted" that we recommend:
animaldietformulator.com
BalanceIT.com
MixitPet.com

This biggest challenge is not "getting lazy" over time and leaving out some ingredients or switching to something cheaper or easier to find.

Please remember, the more you change your pet's food, the pickier they get. The more people food you feed them, the less dog food they eat. High quality dry dog food is not glamorous, but it is well balanced and dogs don't need variety in their diets... in fact, their guts do better with the same food every day.

Dr. K's first week teaching high school students about the veterinary profession in Costa Rica has been quite eventful! They have worked 3 days at a dog rescue with literally thousands of dogs and have taken a tour of a wildlife rescue facility. All exotic pets are illegal in CR. Today they finish the week helping at a cat spay/neuter clinic. Tomorrow, hiking an active volcano is on the agenda!

Sometimes accidents happen and our job is to figure out how we can fix it! This 108g rat had a broken tibia/fibula. Way to small for a plate or a pin, a bandage wouldn't stay on (and would be impossible to keep clean) our only option is to amputate. Not something we get taught in school, we take what we know of other species and create a plan. Since this baby was already not using the leg, she adapted quickly to life as a tripod!
