IMPORTANT REMINDER ABOUT MARINE VELVET
I receive a lot of calls from people with velvet that are not sure how they get it because they haven’t added new fish. So I wanted to put out a reminder that you can get Marine Velvet from adding new coral.
• parasites such as Marine Velvet have free-swimming and encysted stages that can attach to surfaces such as frags.
-If the corals come from a system that had fish with parasites or free-swimming dinoflagellates it can be carried over to your tank.
-If a coral carries a cyst into a fishless tank, the parasite cannot complete its lifecycle and will eventually die off without a fish host. However, if your tank already has fish, the newly hatched parasites can find a host and trigger an outbreak.
• Coral Dips: Using dips like hydrogen peroxide or iodine-based dips can help remove pests like flatworms, nudibranchs, or bacteria, but are NOT as effective in killing Marine Velvet parasites.
