Why do some male cats need PU surgery, while female cats usually don’t?

PU surgery, or perineal urethrostomy, creates a new, wider opening for urine to pass through. It is typically recommended for male cats who have had repeated or severe urinary blockages. Male cats are more prone to obstruction because their urethra is long and narrow. Crystals, stones, mucus, or inflammatory debris can become lodged in this narrow passage, making it difficult or impossible to urinate. A complete blockage is a life-threatening emergency.

For Bugsy, this became a decision his family had to make after he reblocked. After discussing his options with his veterinary team, they chose PU surgery to help reduce his risk of future life-threatening obstructions.

Female cats have a shorter, wider urethra, so they are much less likely to develop this type of obstruction and rarely need PU surgery.

PU surgery isn't usually the first treatment for a blocked cat, but for cats like Bugsy who experience recurring blockages, creating a wider urinary opening can help reduce the risk of it happening again.

Rocky Raccoon recently had an enucleation surgery, which is the surgical removal of an eye. While the thought of removing a pet’s eye can understandably be frightening for pet parents, an enucleation can actually be a tremendous relief for a pet who has a painful or severely damaged eye.

Eyes affected by severe injury, glaucoma, infection, cancer, or other serious conditions can cause significant discomfort. When an eye can no longer be saved or is causing ongoing pain, removing it eliminates that source of discomfort and allows the pet to focus on healing and getting back to feeling like themselves.

And what happens after surgery? Most pets adjust remarkably well! Dogs and cats are incredibly adaptable, and they can live happy, comfortable, fulfilling lives with one eye. They quickly learn to navigate their surroundings using their remaining vision, along with their incredible senses of smell, hearing, and touch.

For Rocky, his enucleation was an important step toward a more comfortable future. While seeing a pet after eye removal may take some getting used to for their family, the goal is always the same: less pain, more comfort, and giving that pet the opportunity to enjoy all the things they love for years to come. On Monday, we introduced you to Tota, who needed emergency surgery to remove her uterus because of hydrometra. Today, we’re introducing you to Winnie, who needed surgery because of pyometra.

But what’s the difference?

💧 Hydrometra = fluid
The uterus fills with clear, watery or mucus-like fluid. There is no bacterial infection, but it can still cause problems and requires surgery because it can turn into pyometra.

🦠 Pyometra = infection
The uterus becomes infected and fills with pus. Pyometra can make a pet very sick and can quickly become life-threatening without treatment.

🐾 The important takeaway:
Both conditions affect the uterus, and both can be prevented by spaying. Spaying removes the uterus and ovaries, preventing pyometra and eliminating the risk of unwanted litters.

We’re so happy Winnie received the care she needed and hope she’s feeling more like herself very soon!

Did you know that dogs start out with 28 baby teeth, but by adulthood, they should have 42 permanent teeth?

Just like people, dogs can develop plaque, tartar, gingivitis, periodontal disease, and painful or diseased teeth. The tricky part? Many dogs are experts at hiding oral pain, so a pet can have significant dental disease without showing obvious signs at home.

That’s why routine dental care is so important!

Murphy recently had a fully anesthetized COHAT (Comprehensive Oral Health Assessment and Treatment). During her procedure, our veterinary team was able to thoroughly examine her mouth, assess each tooth, take dental X-rays, and clean below the gumline. Two diseased teeth were discovered and extracted, helping Murphy get rid of painful sources of dental disease.

A healthy mouth is an important part of your pet’s overall health and comfort. Regular veterinary dental evaluations can help identify problems before they become more serious.

And judging by that happy face, Murphy is pretty pleased to have a healthier smile! If you'd like to schedule a dental procedure with us, please reach out to us at 571-208-0199 or email at [email protected]

“My sister and I were so scared, but everyone at Anicira was an absolute angel. Everybody gave us so much peace of mind and confidence throughout the whole process. Thanks to all your care and love, my baby girl is completely back to her cute and happy self!”

When Tota came to Anicira after being diagnosed with hydrometra, her family was understandably scared and worried. Hydrometra is a condition that can affect unspayed female dogs and cats, occurring when clear, watery fluid builds up inside the uterus, causing it to become enlarged. Depending on the severity, pets may experience lethargy, decreased appetite, and abdominal enlargement.

Hydrometra is different from pyometra, a life-threatening uterine infection, but both conditions are associated with hormonal changes that occur during a female’s heat cycles. In some cases, hydrometra may cause few or no obvious symptoms and may only be discovered through diagnostic imaging or during surgery.

The good news? Hydrometra can be prevented. Spaying removes the uterus and ovaries, eliminating the possibility of hydrometra, pyometra, and other reproductive conditions.

We’re so happy Tota received the care she needed and is now back to her cute and happy self! If you’re interested in having your pets spayed or neutered, please reach out to us by calling 571-208-0199 or emailing at [email protected].

In June, David had surgery to correct a medial patellar luxation, commonly called an MPL.

So, what exactly is an MPL? The patella, or kneecap, normally sits in a groove at the end of the thigh bone and moves up and down as the knee bends. With a medial patellar luxation, the kneecap slips out of that groove toward the inside of the leg. This can cause pain, limping, arthritis, and difficulty using the leg over time.

MPL surgery helps stabilize the kneecap and restore more normal function to the knee. Medial patellar luxations are especially common in small and toy breed dogs, although dogs of any size can be affected.

And recently, the strangest thing happened… David must’ve learned to type because he sent us a pup-date! 🐾

Check out what he had to say: "Hi, it’s David! I’m doing great, still spoiled, still sleeping, and still making sure I’m the center of attention. I’ve also been loving stretching out and showing off my new leg every chance I get.

I miss you guys so much and can’t wait to introduce you to my brother, Otis. He’s amazing, super smart, and LOVES cuddles, so I know you’ll love him too. I told Mom I want to keep you guys as our permanent fixer-uppers. I think you’re called… veter-ninarians? Vetenarians? You know, the people with the treats and stethoscopes.

Mom also said you want to share my story on social media for edumacational purposes. Does this mean I’m a famous model now? Please say yes because I’ve already started bragging to Otis. Please tell all my nurses I miss them!"

Did you know cats start with 26 baby teeth and eventually have 30 adult teeth?

Mocha recently had a fully anesthetized COHAT (Comprehensive Oral Health Assessment and Treatment) and had 2 teeth extracted due to dental disease.

Even after a thorough professional dental cleaning, some cats may still have stinky breath! 😮‍💨 This can be influenced by their grooming habits, diet, and their natural oral flora (the normal bacteria living in the mouth). A dental cleaning helps remove plaque and tartar, but it doesn’t permanently change these factors.

That’s why daily tooth brushing is so helpful, it can reduce plaque buildup and support better oral health between professional cleanings. If you're interested in scheduling an appointment, please reach out to us at 571-208-0199 or email at [email protected].

This is Hercules Mulligan! This giant, loveable Saint Bernard recently had a gastropexy surgery with Dr. Creighton, a procedure that is especially important for deep-chested breeds like Saint Bernards. (PS - keep reading for a surprise ending!)

So, what exactly is a gastropexy, and why do we recommend it for these dogs? Deep-chested dogs are at an increased risk for gastric dilatation-volvulus, or GDV, commonly called bloat. GDV occurs when the stomach becomes distended with gas or food and then twists on itself. This twisting can cut off blood supply to the stomach and other organs, interfere with circulation, cause shock, and become life-threatening very quickly.

During a gastropexy, the stomach is surgically attached to the abdominal wall. This creates a permanent attachment that helps prevent the stomach from twisting into the dangerous position associated with GDV.

A gastropexy does not prevent the stomach from filling with gas or becoming distended, so a dog can still experience bloat afterward. However, it greatly reduces the risk of stomach twisting, which is the most dangerous component of GDV. For dogs at higher risk, including Saint Bernards, Great Danes, German Shepherds, and other deep-chested breeds, a preventative gastropexy is highly recommended and can often be performed during another planned surgery.

And because apparently Hercules felt that a gastropexy wasn't quite exciting enough for one day, Dr. Creighton discovered he'd had been keeping a secret from everyone...

GREEN AND PINK WOOLEN SOCKS! 🧦💚🩷

That's right. The Great Sock Bandit had swallowed not one, but TWO socks, which Dr. Creighton discovered and removed during surgery!

Foreign objects such as socks can become lodged in the stomach or intestines and cause a potentially life-threatening obstruction. Thankfully, Hercules' secret wardrobe was discovered before it could cause a serious problem.

So Hercules went home with his stomach safely secured, his socks recovered, and hopefully a newfound appreciation for keeping his wardrobe OUT of his stomach. If you’d like to learn more about anicira, please visit anicira.org.

Two Dogs. One Surgery. One Special Friendship. When Piper and Darby arrived at Anicira for their TPLO surgeries, neither family knew they were about to share more than just the same surgery date.

A TPLO (Tibial Plateau Leveling Osteotomy) is a common orthopedic procedure used to treat a torn cranial cruciate ligament (CCL) in dogs. During the procedure, the tibial plateau is surgically rotated to stabilize the knee, allowing the leg to function without relying on the damaged ligament. While TPLO is a major surgery, it can give dogs the opportunity to return to comfortable, active lives.

For Piper and Darby, their recovery journeys began side by side.

Their pet parents quickly realized they were going to be navigating many of the same questions, concerns, activity restrictions, and milestones that come with TPLO recovery. They exchanged phone numbers and stayed in touch throughout the process, checking in with each other and comparing notes to see if their dogs were experiencing similar things along the way.

Eight weeks later, Piper and Darby were back at Anicira on the very same day for their recheck appointments. And the best part? Both dogs showed appropriate healing! What began as two families arriving for the same surgery turned into an unexpected friendship, and a built-in support system during what can be a challenging recovery.

We love seeing the connections that happen because of the special bond we all share: helping our pets live their healthiest, happiest lives.

Here’s to Piper and Darby, their dedicated pet parents, and many more happy, active adventures ahead!

Cinder recently underwent a thorough dental procedure after being diagnosed with dental disease. But the true extent of his dental disease wasn’t known until dental X-rays were performed. During his procedure, our veterinary team discovered that 16 teeth needed to be extracted due to significant disease and damage.

Performing dental procedures under full anesthesia allows us to thoroughly evaluate each tooth, take dental X-rays, clean above and below the gumline, and treat painful or diseased teeth when necessary.

For Cinder, this meant removing 16 unhealthy teeth so his mouth could heal and he could get back to feeling his best.

Dental disease can cause significant pain and discomfort, even when our pets don’t show obvious signs. Regular dental examinations, X-rays, and professional cleanings can help identify problems early, before they become more serious.

We’re so proud of Cinder and can’t wait to see him enjoy a healthier, happier smile! 🐾🦷 Interested in scheduling a dental procedure for your pet? Give us a call at 571-208-0199.
