Every dog has an inherent need to regularly move their body freely in nature. This is true, even if it can be inconvenient or inaccessible for some. This is true even if your dog is old, small, or disabled. It’s true in the same way that dogs need food, water, shelter, and social encounters. This need is the reason Zoomies was created. Dogs who have their needs predictably met are happier, healthier, and more able to fit into our world. The goal should always be off leash freedom. Is that achievable for every dog? No. Some dog and human teams do not have the temperament, skills, or access to safely do off leash time in nature. That doesn’t mean the need goes away. It’s up to the humans to figure out alternative ways to meet that need. Long lines, field rentals, fenced in areas, etc, all can help meet that need in your dog. Something is better than nothing and your dog will be grateful for any move in the direction of safe off leash freedom. Even if it’s a long line sniffy walk at your local park, that still counts towards the goal. So don’t be afraid to give your dog some more freedom, do it however you’re comfortable with, and do it often.

Note: E collars are not necessary or advisable to meet this need. Is it really freedom if there’s the constant threat of pain looming over your dogs head? Meeting your dogs needs and using pain and fear to train are not compatible.
