We know that canine parvovirus is once again making the rounds in our community, and the best way to avoid your dog contracting it is staying up to date on their vaccinations. A standard distemper vaccine will protect your dog from this severe gastrointestinal disease, which is present in canine f***l matter and can be carried on paws, shoes, and anything else that touches the ground where an infected dog has been.

At this time, we are still planning to move forward with including dogs at our 33rd Annual Paws On Parade celebration, which will take place on the Bangor Waterfront on Saturday, October 3rd from 10am-1pm. If your dog has been vaccinated, there is little to worry about, but we do discourage owners from bringing very young puppies or dogs that are immunocompromised.

We hope to see you and your 💉vaccinated💉 dogs there! 🐾🐕❤ Visit us here to register: https://donations.bangorhumane.org/event/33rd-annual-paws-on-parade/e783288

Help Outdoor Cats Beat the Heat This Summer! ☀️🐱

Hot weather can be dangerous for outdoor and community cats, but a few simple acts of kindness can make a life-saving difference. Place fresh water in shaded areas, create cool resting spots with umbrellas, tarps, or large plants, and provide safe shelters where cats can escape the heat. Cooling mats or frozen water bottles wrapped in a towel can also help lower their body temperature on extremely hot days. Small gestures from compassionate people can keep vulnerable cats safe, hydrated, and comfortable throughout the summer.

💬 Have you ever helped a stray cat stay cool during a heatwave? Share your ideas in the comments and inspire others to protect our furry friends!

The body processes more than a single type of nutrient, and indoor cats require a balanced approach to their daily meals to maintain long-term health. Managing nutrition effectively supports a feline’s metabolism and hydration levels throughout their life stages.

1. Establishing fixed meal times helps regulate a cat's metabolism, which prevents the constant grazing that often leads to unwanted weight gain.
2. Using a measuring tool ensures that the exact caloric intake is provided, as eyeballing portions frequently results in providing more food than a sedentary cat can burn off.
3. Offering a combination of wet and dry food provides necessary moisture and textural variety, which supports kidney health and dental stimulation.
4. Cleaning the water dish every twenty-four hours eliminates bacterial buildup, ensuring the cat feels encouraged to drink enough water throughout the day.

Small adjustments in how we serve food often lead to noticeable improvements in a pet's daily energy levels and overall well-being.

Winter is here and the chill is setting in — but your cat still wants to go out? 🥶

Fur helps, but not always. So please keep these temps in mind when letting your cat out:

45°F / 7°C and below: many cats (especially short‑haired or senior) start to feel chilly 🐾

32°F / 0°C and below: keep outside time short for kittens, seniors, short‑haired, or unwell cats ❌

20°F / -7°C and below: all cats are at risk of hypothermia and frostbite — bring them indoors ⚠️

Little winter tips:

- Set up warm, draft‑free nap spots and cozy blankets
- Rinse and dry paws after outdoor time to remove salt and de‑icing chemicals
- Dry damp fur and check paws/ears for ice or cracks
- Keep fresh, unfrozen water available

If your kitty insists on exploring, don't forget to recharge your so you can find them fast and bring them inside quickly when temps drop ❄️

🌟 Remember: every cat is different. Breed, coat, age, health, and activity level matter. Cold‑tolerant breeds like Norwegian Forest Cats, Siberians, and Maine C***s often handle low temps better; more sensitive breeds like Sphynx, Devon Rex, Cornish Rex, Siamese, and Oriental Shorthair need extra care and shorter outdoor time.

What kind of winter cat do you have: window watcher, blanket burrito, or brave snow scout? 🐱
