🎆🇺🇸 Now is the time!! ❤️🎆

If you need sedation for your horse(s), today is the day to call your veterinarian, that you have an established relationship with 😜, to get advice for the firework shows we will be blessed with this upcoming weekend.

💦 Also, while I have your attention. It is so hot 🔥. Please, please water your selves 🥵 and your animals. Animals love cool FRESH water. Electrolytes are helpful to drive thirst. Sensitive animals (the old and the young) really need shade in the next few days.

Stay safe ! ❤️🇺🇸

Ya'll ready ?! ❄️🐴🥶

Shall we laugh or cry??

We will answer phone calls this weekend and do our best to help clients over the phone but most likely will not be able to navigate the roads on Saturday +/- Sunday. Fortunately, we have staff living in all directions of the clinic and they are being sent home with some emergency items in the event you can get to them easier than to the clinic.

Emergency line this weekend:

Don't forget!
Water for the horses and water for your self!

49 days til spring 🌼🌱🌞

How we doing out there? What can we do to guide you or help? Call and let us know ❄️🐴🥶

SnowMG!!
I know your feed is full of weather predictions.

🥶 Either way it's going to be cold!

Let's prep now! Do not wait until the high is 26 degrees this weekend to do something about it!!

This is what we see 🐴 as large animal road warriors🚑:

❄️ When it is actively cold, we see the down horse. Down, can not get up, hypothermic. These tend to be our seniors or those that are low on body condition/fat/muscle. Prepare now. Find a warm spot or a place where if they do lay down, they are not on frozen ground.

❄️ After the cold, we see impactions. These take days to "back up" as a result of multiple days with less water consumption than needed. Prepare now! Push water! Leave your ideas below! Salt blocks, free salt in the feed, senior tea, soaked hay pellets/cubes.

**Access to non frozen water is crucial! Have you ever stood outside for hours when it's 30 degrees and sipped on ice cold water ?!?

🐴
We are aware of the NBHA post today and realize many clients were at this show.

* None of these horses have tested positive. Testing is in the process, this takes time*

If you were at the show, please take the temperature of all horses in your barn twice per day. Yes, even the horses that did not go to the show. If the temperature is over 101.5, contact your veterinarian.

🤠 If your horse has not been vaccinated in the past 90 days, and you would like to booster with a vaccine, contact us. Giving the vaccine will help reduce transmission and slow spread.

THE VACCINE DOES NOT PROTECT AGAINST THE NEUROLOGIC FORM. But it does support the immune system.

We are receiving a high number of calls and texts so please bear with us 💕

👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 ANNOUNCMENT 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼

We have a large population of rodeo horses and realize that Texas and Oklahoma are a long way from home, but we do have clients that travel these circuits. We are here for you and hope to answer your questions.

At this time, 5–10 horses are known to to be sick, but the true number is likely higher as many cases go unreported.

What Horse Owners Should Do Right Now:

1. Keep all horses at home!
Please avoid hauling, clinics, lessons, shows, or mingling horses for the next several weeks until more information is available.

Movement is the #1 factor that spreads EHV-1.
________________________________________

2. Check temperatures daily!
Fever is usually the first sign (often before nasal discharge or neurologic symptoms).
• Temp at or above 101.5°F = call your veterinarian.
________________________________________

3. Notify your veterinarian immediately if your horse exhibits:
• Fever
• Weakness or incoordination
• Standing with hindlimbs wide
• Tail tone changes
• Difficulty urinating
• Lethargy or decreased appetite

Early intervention improves outcomes.
________________________________________

4. Discuss treatment options with your veterinarian.

For febrile or exposed horses, your vet may recommend:
• Valacyclovir
• Aspirin or other anti-thrombotics
• Anti-inflammatories
• Supportive care

(These should only be used under veterinary direction.)
________________________________________

5. Biosecurity matters.
• Do not share water buckets, hoses, tack, grooming tools, or stalls.
• Disinfect trailers, thermometers, and crossties.
• Isolate any horse with fever immediately.

About Vaccination.

Current evidence shows vaccines do not prevent EHM, but they can reduce viral shedding and shorten viremia, which lowers barn-wide spread and is important to the community.

Boosters are helpful when:
• A horse was vaccinated > 90 days ago, or
• You are preparing for high-risk environments (events, hauling, mixing populations).

What the research shows:
• Booster vaccination increases IgG1 and IgG4/7, the antibody classes linked with limiting viremia.
• Reduced viremia = reduced likelihood of severe disease and decreased transmission.
• Boosters are most effective in younger horses, previously vaccinated horses, and non-pregnant horses.

Vaccines do NOT stop a horse already incubating EHV-1 from developing signs, and they do not eliminate the risk of neurologic disease. For horses already exposed or febrile, do not vaccinate until cleared by your veterinarian.

Happy National Veterinary Technician week!

We have 100+ vet technicians and assistants at Hagyard, which makes up nearly a quarter of our staff. Our technicians are not just the backbone of our hospital, but the backbone of the entire industry.

Thank you to our techs (and all techs!) for their endless positivity, tireless work ethic and skills as horsemen and horsewomen that allow Hagyard to provide top-notch care to our patients.

10/15/2025

Veterinary technicians, assistants and support staff are critical to the day-to-day function of veterinary practices, and they play vital roles in ensuring compassionate, high-quality care for all animals. As we celebrate National Veterinary Technician and Assistant Appreciation Week, please join us and our friends at AAEVT-American Association of Equine Veterinary Technicians and Assistants in showing appreciation for our veterinarians’ right-hand men and women!
