What a great idea, even a great thing if you are on the fence about bringing a new pet home. Great exposure for pets and probably a great opportunity to meet like minded people.

Very well summarized. The best practice is to clean up after yourself and keep your property clean. Make sure you hire a reputable pest control service, there are too many that take the short cuts that will guarantee more service calls and besides the cost involved, you will have dead mice and flies, bugs in your home.

A poisoned rodent. 🐀
A deadly ripple. 💀

Rodenticides don’t just kill rats and mice, they also harm the wild carnivores that keep our ecosystems healthy. Rodenticides remain in a rodent’s body, and any fox, coyote, bobcat, owl, or other animal (even cats and dogs!) that eats that rodent can become sick or die.

The good news? There are safer, highly effective alternatives!

✔ Seal entry points: Use rodent-proof mesh and steel wool to block crawl spaces, basements, and foundation gaps. Look for pest control companies that offer humane exclusion methods.
✔ Sanitation is key: Secure trash, compost, and pet food. Remove fallen fruit, clean up bird seed, keep firewood away from homes, and clear ivy or debris near buildings. As a bonus, this reduces conflicts with other wildlife.
✔ Humane rodent removal: Use live traps to catch and release rodents outdoors or consider rodent birth control like Contrapest. Avoid glue traps! They’re inhumane and can harm non-target animals.
✔ Support natural predators: Wild carnivores naturally remove thousands of rodents every year.

Choosing to eliminate rodenticides at home, at work, and in your community helps protect both local wildlife and pets, all while supporting a healthier ecosystem for everyone.
