Don’t let fly season be a disruption to your equine’s health and behavioral wellness.

Bites from stable flies and horse flies trigger habronemiasis, or summer sores. Insect bite hypersensitivity (IBH) from Culicoides midges leads to urticaria, alopecia, and secondary infections. Restlessness, stereotypic behaviors (tail swishing, stomping), hyper itching and reduced grazing increase stress in your horse.

Here’s how Doc recommends you battle the bite:

• Topicals: From Fly sprays to fly prevention ointments, Pyrethroid (permethrin) or citronella repellents can help keep flies off your horse Be sure to patch-test for sensitivity. There’s a million options to chose from from different manufacturers.

• Protective Gear: Fly sheets, masks and fly leggings can all help for longer term protection while flyspray wear off.

Keeping It Clean: Hauling Your Horse Safely 🐎🚛

To keep your horse healthy during transport, maintain a clean trailer and smart habits:

1. Clean & Disinfect Trailer: Before/after trips, remove bedding and debris, scrub with horse-safe detergent, and disinfect (e.g., 1:10 bleach-water solution). Rinse and dry to prevent mold.

2. Disinfect Overnight Stalls: Clear waste, sweep, scrub with disinfectant, and ensure ventilation. Let stalls dry before use.

3. Avoid Shared Buckets: Use dedicated buckets to prevent disease spread (e.g., equine herpesvirus). Sanitize collapsible buckets between uses.

4. Keep Hose Clean: Don’t let the hose touch bucket water to avoid contamination. Check buckets for debris and clean if needed.

5. Extra Tips:
• Sanitize tack before/after use.
• Use fresh bedding; remove soiled bedding promptly.
• Avoid horse mingling at stops.
• Wash hands or use sanitizer after handling other horses/equipment.

Let’s chat today about Regenerative Therapies in the equine sports medicine.

Regenerative therapies are revolutionizing the scope of equine sports med. Veterinarians are helping horses recover faster and maintain peak performance.

Here’s a brief break down of what Regenerative Therapies are.

Platelet- Rich Plasma (PRP):

Concentrated platelets from the horses own blood that is processed to release growth factors to aid in boosting the healing of tendon’s, ligaments and joints. PRP is seen in the treatment of superficial digital flexor tendonitis or osteoarthritis in racehorse’s and jumpers.

Autologous Conditioned Serum (ASC/ IRAP):
