We’re incredibly proud to celebrate our very own Dr. Joanna Finstad, DVM, MS, DACVECC, who has been named dvm360’s 2026 Veterinary Hero in Emergency Medicine! 🏆🐾

The annual Veterinary Heroes Awards recognize extraordinary veterinary professionals whose leadership, expertise, and dedication have advanced veterinary medicine and made a meaningful difference in the lives of animals and the people who love them.

Since joining Madison Veterinary Specialists as a board-certified Critical Care Specialist, Dr. Finstad has brought an extraordinary level of expertise, compassion, and innovation to our hospital and our community. She helped establish Wisconsin’s only active veterinary dialysis program, expanding access to advanced treatment options that were previously unavailable to pets in our region.

Those of us fortunate enough to work alongside Dr. Finstad see every day what makes this recognition so well deserved — her commitment to her patients, her willingness to take on the most challenging cases, and her dedication to continually advancing the level of care we can provide.

Did you know dogs can have strokes, too?

When Sadie suddenly became unable to walk and developed significant weakness on the left side of her body, our Neurology team performed an MRI, which revealed a stroke affecting the right side of her forebrain.

The good news? With supportive care and time, many pets can make remarkable recoveries - and Sadie was one of them. Just two weeks later, Sadie returned for her recheck walking normally, with a normal neurologic exam.

Neurologic emergencies can be frightening, but advanced imaging like MRI allows us to quickly identify the cause and guide the best treatment plan for our patients. ❤️🐾

This month we celebrated Leo’s retirement from our blood donor program.

In the 5 years he donated, Leo gave 16 blood donations, helping save the lives of approximately 40 dogs in need. Every donation gave another family a chance at more time with their beloved companion—a gift that can’t be measured.

To Leo, thank you for being such a selfless hero. And to his owner, Mette, thank you for your dedication to our blood donor program and for making such a meaningful difference in the lives of so many patients.

In May, two of our CVTs graduated from the Bachelors of Science in Veterinary Technology program at Mizzou. This changes their titles to CVTg - which means much more than just one more letter. Their studies extend beyond in depth clinical skills and knowledge to include classes in fields such as leadership & management. We are so proud of Natalie and Baylee! They worked hard to pursue this degree while still caring for patients full-time and it is such an accomplishment. 🎓❤️🐾

Blu has to be one of our more interesting oncology patients…and not because of his cancer. He completed his CHOP chemotherapy protocol today!

Blue was actually scheduled for his last dose two weeks ago, but that day he threw us a curve ball. That day an abdominal ultrasound was being performed to determine the stage of his cancer. Instead of heading to the chemo administration suite after, he went took a trip to the surgery prep area for abdominal surgery to remove a few foreign objects from his intestine. An incidental finding that saved him a lot of pain!

Ultimately, he recovered from surgery and completed treatment. We are so excited for him and his family. He is a really wonderful guy.
