BRAVO

Our sweet and handsome boy Bravo is still with us, and we can't figure out why? He came to us from Peoria County Animal Protection Services about a month and a half ago, and has been a goofy, loving guy from the start. He loves a good bone to chew on, or a walk with our volunteers.

Bravo is estimated to be about 3 years old, likely a bulldog mix. At adoption events, he did well around other dogs, kiddos, and was pretty neutral with cats. If you're looking for a dog that will make you smile and be your best bud, Bravo is the guy for you!

It takes a village! Major shoutout to all of our rescue partners and fosters who stepped up to help us with our breeder release last week. We had no intention of keeping all of the 41 dogs in our care, as many needed advanced medical care which is a long and expensive undertaking. Sharing the load keeps things manageable for each of us, while ensuring we are still able to help others within our communities. It's an honor to have so many incredible partners and fosters willing to help us with unexpected and overwhelming situations such as these.

Thank you to our partners:
🐾Coulee Region Humane Society
🐾Bullies-N-Friends
🐾Wisconsin Boston Terrier Rescue

And to the fosters who helped with this case:
💜Stark Family
💜Faith
💜Katie
💜Weinstein Family
💜Brittany
💜Yunako
💜Taylor
💜Sharon

We are always in search of more foster homes. If you're interested in joining our amazing village, and saving some lives please visit sftsrescue.org/foster to learn more!

It's been a busy morning around here! Our Boston mama from our breeder release has been in labor since early this morning. We've been monitoring her closely, and so far she's progressing beautifully. Should any complications arise, our talented team at Wisconsin Community Veterinary Center is ready and waiting.

Thankfully, after years and years of breeding she will finally get a break, and a family of her own. So far she's given birth to 4 babies, sadly 1 did not make it but everyone else is nursing well and keeping toasty warm. We've set up an isolated room at our facility for the moms from this case, and could use some support if you're able!

💕Fosters: We need a couple more fosters, we have a couple litters of various ages. To learn more please visit sftsrescue.org/foster

💕Supply donations: Our wishlist has been has been updated with needed items to help with these beautiful moms and the many other animals in our care. https://www.amazon.com/registries/gl/guest-view/2Q7UB2OC3UW3G?ref_=cm_sw_r_cp_ud_ggr-subnav-share_772QZ8Q03KR1QQRV556W

💕Monetary support: If you're able to help with their cost of care, we'd greatly appreciate any and all donations! sftsrescue.org/donate

Thank you to everyone who has cheered us on, stepped up to help, and sent items our way as we navigate this large intake. It takes a village, and we couldn't do it without you! We'll share more about mama later today. Please send well-wishes her way!

*Please note: We as an organization believe in spay/abort, when appropriate and safe, and have done so with many females from this case. Moms and puppies were also transferred to other organizations who stepped up to help. Our veterinary team determined due to age and being only a couple days from birth, the risk was too high for this particular mom. Any negative comments will be deleted and you will be blocked.

After everyone was settled we spent most of Saturday cleaning up from transport and grooming the curly coated dogs who arrived. They were pretty matted, and many had wood shavings and debris in their coats. Most needed to be completed shaved, which we’re confident provided a lot of relief for them. Overall they were very patient and tolerant during the process.

Reminder for anyone looking to adopt a curly coated dog - they require regular grooming and daily brushing! Maintaining their coat is your responsibility for their health and wellness, and can be very costly. Thankfully these guys will all have a fresh start, and we can’t wait to see how beautifully their coats come in over time!

41 DOG INTAKE - BREEDER CLOSURE

Early Friday morning our team headed out to one of the largest dog surrenders from a single property we've ever dealt with. A puppy mill closed its doors, handed over its license, and voluntarily released all dogs on the property to Shelter From The Storm Animal Rescue. With the help of our incredible partner Shayla, we pulled off the unimaginable - ensuring all 41 dogs went to rescue where their medical needs will be addressed, their babies cared for, and they will all be spayed/neutered to end the cycle of irresponsible breeding for profit.

Many of these dogs are seniors, with horrible dental disease that needs to be addressed. We also welcomed 4 nursing moms, who we are urgently seeking foster homes for. The longer haired dogs are extensively matted, and many of the bostons are missing pieces of their ears, potentially from infighting. Although we'll never know exactly what they endured, we're grateful the breeder did the right thing and asked for help, ensuring these dogs will receive the care they deserve.

As is often true in rescue, this was unexpected. Less than 48 hours after being notified we were unloading dogs at our shelter, completing intake exams, vaccinating, and providing treatment to these dogs. Although understandably overwhelmed, these dogs are amazingly gentle and sweet. Because of how fast everything happened, we had little time to plan and gather necessary supplies and funding. Now that we have everyone settled, we're asking for your help to care for this massive intake. We've updated our wishlist, are in need of additional foster homes, and have a growing list of care needs to address.

We rotate drivers when we go places so one person can continue working while the other drives. Today, “work” for Andrea looked like bottle feeding kittens while we headed back to Madison.😍

This week has been crazy busy, and yesterday we took on a local colony of cats in Stoughton needing TNR. Yesterday we removed 13 kittens, including these 4 bottle babies.🍼 The adults we set traps for, and will be TNR’ing for the owner over the next couple weeks. We’re unsure if all will be able to remain on the property, but for now we’re taking it day by day.

We need to raise around $1,000 just to cover the cost of spay/neuter alone for the estimated number of cats.🐈 $5 Friday is almost over, but could you pitch in $5 to help get this situation under control? Additionally, we could use some additional wet kitten food, non clumping, and pine pellet litter so if you’re able to donate from our chewy wishlist we’d greatly appreciate it!🙏

Morning guys - Payton here! Andrea and I are on the road for what is sure to be a very hectic day. I don't really do mornings😅 but you know what else I don't do? Unnecessary and uncalled for judgement and backlash from those who know nothing about our organization, our team, and the work we do every day.

To clear a few things up, SFTS has been around for 21 years. We have assisted thousands and thousands of people and animals in need of help, locally and across the nation. This situation is no different. We did not breed these dogs, we are not responsible for what has happened due to years and years of backyard breeding. But we do have a responsibility to our community to help when we are asked, and when our resources allow us the privilege of taking on cases such as these.

This breeder is closing its doors, and its license is being revoked. Legally all dogs must leave the property by a certain date. We are grateful they asked for help instead of passing the dogs off to irresponsible owners or backyard breeders. We are not paying a dime for these dogs, and in fact they will cost our organization tens of thousands of dollars to care for and medically prepare for adoption, as many are seniors. All decisions, as always, will be thoughtfully and ethically made with the our veterinary staff, behavior team, board of directors, and leadership staff in accordance with best practices and our protocols as a rescue. We truly just want what is best for these dogs.

Kinda ridiculous this is how I have to start my morning, but the keyboard warriors were out in full force following our post last night. So I'd rather just squash the hate now and provide some transparency. Thank you to everyone who supports our mission, and leads with kindness. You guys are the best.

Any negative comments will be deleted, and you will be blocked. We just don't have the time or the energy to focus on anything but the wellbeing of these guys and the 100+ other animals in our care. Much more to come, as we find our more details and sort through everything. We're going to need all of you in our corner to make this happen!
