We are an all-breed companion animal rescue and affordable vet clinic in Madison, Wisconsin.

📧 EMAIL us at [email protected] with all questions to reach us directly! We place animals in our volunteer foster homes so they can get all they need while they await their forever homes. Animals do not reside at our office or clinic; they live in our volunteer foster homes. We offer full-servic

e, non emergency veterinary care Monday-Friday. We provide spays, neuters, dental care, and other surgical services for cats and dogs. We also offer wellness health services (annual exams, vaccines, blood work, microchips, etc). Our clinic sees our Underdog animals, and is also open to the public. We offer lower-cost spay/neuter services to everyone, but help with other health services on a sliding scale basis. Email us at [email protected] to make an appointment for veterinary services.

🌸 We "May" have had a pretty great month... 🐾

124 animals found loving homes in May, and we couldn't be more grateful! Thank you to every adopter, foster, volunteer, and supporter who helped create this garden of happy endings. 🌷🐶🐱

🐾 HAPPY TAILS: The Underdog Family 🐾

We love a good "it’s a small world" adoption story, and Vinny’s is one for the books! 🥹❤️

When Vinny’s foster mom was looking for his perfect forever home, she had a specific wish list: someone active, outdoorsy, and dedicated to training this smart pup. She decided to reach out to a wonderful former adopter (and dad to Underdog alum, Dolly 🐶) to see if he knew anyone.

Well, the universe worked fast! Just a couple of hours later, he called back with the best news—his son, Ben, wanted to adopt Vinny! 🥳

Ben patiently waited a couple of weeks for Vinny to clear quarantine after a littermate got sick, proving from day one just how committed he was. Today, it became official! Vinny is going to have the absolute best life, complete with an active outdoor lifestyle and plenty of playtime with his new pack—including his Underdog sister Dolly and a sweet canine roommate! 🏞️✨

We could not have asked for a better match. Happy tails, Vinny and Ben!

✨ FOSTER SPOTLIGHT: Crissy ✨

When Crissy's beloved resident dog passed away in May 2024, she knew she was ready to open her home to foster animals. Encouraged by her friend and mentor, Melissa, she began fostering with Underdog just two months later.

Since then, she has helped many animals on their journey to finding forever homes, but one foster in particular left a lasting impression.

In February 2025, Crissy took in two feral cats, including a mama cat named Peach. The cats were much more fearful than she anticipated, and Peach spent the next 10 months learning to trust.

Crissy shared, “There were so many amazing moments—the first time I could pet her, the first time she rolled over for a belly rub, the first time she purred for me, the first time I was able to hold her.”

Despite having her quirks, Peach was adopted out to a very sweet young person and has opened up even more in her new home.

Crissy adds, “It made my heart SO happy to see how far she came with me, and how much further along she's doing in her new home. I LOVE when adopters keep me posted and updated with pictures.”

For Crissy, one thing that makes fostering special is discovering each animal’s true personality.

Are they playful and snuggly? Or shy and like to hide? By getting to know each pet’s likes, dislikes, and unique quirks, fosters can help make the best possible match between pets and adopters.

And when that match is discovered and it’s time to send them off to their forever home?

Crissy acknowledges how hard that goodbye can be but shares, “I know it allows me to pull/save more....so I keep doing it!”

She also credits Underdog's incredible foster community for helping make it all possible.

"I generally think Underdog has the BEST ‘village’ of fosters and helpers!"

This little sweetheart is currently in a foster home, and after just two weeks, his true colors are starting to shine. He is a gentle, observant boy who wants nothing more than to "fit in" and learn your routines.

✨ The Perfect Match for Pretzel:
The Vibe: A quiet, low-key household where he can decompress at his own pace.
The Setup: A calm house or even a quiet apartment (as long as there’s a nice green space nearby for potty breaks!).
The Pack: He would do wonderfully as an only dog, or with another gentle, mellow canine sibling to show him the ropes.
The Humans: Experienced adopters who understand that the best things in life take a little time.

A Gentle Soul: While he was very stressed initially and showed some defensive behaviors (like a little growl or snap when scared), he has completely settled. He is not aggressive at all—just a sensitive pup who needed to know he was safe.
The Ultimate Co-Pilot: Pretzel actually loves being carried! In fact, he’s so content being held that his foster parent thinks he might love riding around in a front-pack carrier.
Progress is his Middle Name: It is incredibly rewarding to watch Pretzel evolve out of his protective shell. Every day, he shows a little more trust, confidence, and comfort

According to his foster: "Pretzel seems like a gentle soul who needs to experience trust and comfort at his own pace. This little darling is an absolute sweetheart when you give him time." ❤️

Sir the rabbit is just a fun dude with very refined manners ☕️

At just 1 year old Sir can be a little shy at first but after some times he warms up and shows off his fun loving self! He loves his tunnel, but can’t be trusted with boxes unsupervised because he’s learned how to push them to the low part of his gate and let himself out to play. 📦

We all love a foodie and Sir definitely is one so he needs his pellets scattered or in a snuffle mat/slow feeder! 🥬

If you’re ready for the cutest rabbit chaos, Sir is the guy for you! 🐰

If you're experiencing financial hardship and need food or supplies for your pet, we're here to help. Take what you need (and no more) from our pantry, which is restocked regularly thanks to the generosity of our supporters.

🔍 Microchip Scanner
Found a stray animal? Our microchip scanner is available 24/7 and can help reunite lost pets with their families. Simply follow the instructions posted on the Resource Center to scan for a chip and check if the animal is registered.

We believe that helping pets means supporting the people who love them, too. Whether you're caring for your own pet or trying to help a lost one find its way home, these resources are here for our community.

The staff and volunteers of Underdog founded the Madison Chapter of The Street Dog Coalition to provide free veterinary care for pets of people experiencing, or at risk of, homelessness. 🐶🐱

📅 Our next clinic will be held on Wednesday, June 17, 2026, from 10 AM – 2 PM.

At these pop-up clinics, pets of people experiencing or at risk of homelessness can receive core vaccinations, flea & tick prevention, spay/neuter vouchers, and, when available, food or pet supplies. Pets are treated on a first-come, first-served basis, and at times, we are not able to see all pets. Limit of two pets per person/family.

📍 The clinic is held in our Warehouse at 2508 S Stoughton Rd, Madison and is bus accessible. The Pflaum & Camden stop is just a 1-minute walk away. Madison Metro allows caged pets that fit on laps. 🚌
