Alto
This one hurt real bad y'all.

Alto came to me from Madison's OG hiking group - Doggy ร— Nature. Through a series of entanglements, the boys came to be PMH dogs. I will never forget that meet & greet, that perfect little boy's big bark, Franklin's immediate affection, & the relationships that have come to be since. Alto & Frankie, the brothers. Alto the wanderer & Frankie the velcro boy.

When a hiking dog is diagnosed with a terminal illness, we can't take hiking away from them. Often times, it is the highlight of their week, so we let them have that, right up until the very end, right up until their bodies tell us it's time.
It's a great privilege to give these dogs the kind of joy that hiking brings. It's an even bigger honor to take them hiking for their very last hike. Alto gave me a great gift on July 7th, & I'll carry that boy with me forever the way I carried him home that day.

Alto's last hike started like every other hike. He was jazzed to go! Pep in his step, hopped in the van without assistance & enjoyed his ride curled up next to Bruiser. Once on the trails we leashed up & off we went bee-bopping around, ears flopping, tongue joyously hangin,' smelling all the things, peeing on the stuff, yelling at the youngsters for getting too close - typical Alto antics. He started tugging, wanting to go into the weeds, a sure fire sign he's got legit business to tend to. I figured he had more to release & told him to enjoy his p**p (yes I totally said, "enjoy your p**p little buddy") & met the pack at the watering hole. Alto wandered back, gave me a look, & suddenly everything changed.
Our little old man was ready to go.

They say that dogs know. That their pack knows.
I'll never forget the energy on those trails that day. As Alto was telling me it was time, the whole pack laid around us, calmly, quietly.
They knew.

A heartbreaking goodbye. Also the sweetest goodbye any one of these dogs could give me. I only hope that my final days are like his, with one last hike before my loved ones give me one last squeeze & wish me a farewell.

Alto was surrounded by his parents & his brother as he drifted away peacefully โœจ๏ธ

Loaf turned 3 on Sunday!

Happy Birthday to our favorite little baguette, Sir Loafington! We celebrated this vivacious dude with his very own special treat from . Of course we also celebrated with apples, carrots, lots of love and extra time baking in the sunshine. We checked out the new, bigger brush piles, and chased each other around the trails. We're so happy we got to be a part of his celebration!

Happy Birthday bud, we love you so stinking much!

Hazel turned 8 last week!

Happy Birthday to our favorite awkward little duckling! We celebrated her 8th rotation around the sun with an extra weekly hike, a special cookie, and of course she got to ride sh***un all by herself, just how she likes it. We gave her extra freedom to run, roam, and roll in the smellies. She zoomed the trails and then snoozed all the way home. We hope you had the best day sweetpea!

Happy Birthday Hazey Daisy!

An Alto Update:

Take a moment to sit down, brace yourself, and take a deep breath. I've been avoiding this post for weeks now, as it breaks my heart to have to write this news. I wish I was bringing you a positive update, but unfortunately, this is not that.

Our sweet baby boy, old man Alto, is sick. The kind of sick you don't recover from. He's been having a lot of digestive issues that we hoped would clear up by avoiding certain foods, deterring the consumption of mystery treasure, and eating a special diet. Unfortunately, even while closely monitoring his intake, he was still having digestive upset. Upon further investigation, our boy is experiencing a few other very serious ailments. He's got a thickening of the stomach lining, along with growths on his gallbladder and his adrenal gland. Sadly, the professionals are not recommending treatment for him ๐Ÿ’”
We don't know how long our boy's got, but we're going to give him the absolute best until his body says, "No more." We'll hike with him every day that he desires to go, and he'll get a fresh cozy blanket to cozy up in during our pick-ups, as he absolutely loves snuggling under a blankie. Keep him, his brother Frankie, and their family in your thoughts. Hug your babes a little tighter tonight. They truly don't get enough time with us.

Little post-hike van clip fer ya, featuring the tender affection between two lovebirds.
I think we're all just searching for a love like Linkin & Hester's. Two independent souls that always make their way back to each other. Watching Linkin love her is my favorite. No matter what she gets into, no matter how much time apart, no matter how much space she takes, he's always there in the end, and she always comes back to him.

Baby Bailey Boy turned 4 this week!

Happy Birthday to this wild boy, who I cannot believe is 4 years old. When I first met Bailey, he was 6 months old, and we were both hiking with a different company. After two years, his family and I reconnected, and he immediately snuggled up next to me and had a little nap on my lap. We knew that having him join my pack was the right decision. He and Ducky quickly became close and I'm grateful every day for the events that brought us all back together. We celebrated with a little trip to where he picked out a special something for himself.

Happy Birthday baby boy!!

Cookies from always! They make the cutest and most delicious dog treats.

Cheers to another year of living my dream life!
Getting to be in the woods every day for the last two years with these incredible dogs is truly an amazing gift. What a privilege it is to have so much love & support from so many wonderful people who give me a chance every day to build a better relationship with their best friend. Thank you to everyone involved in this dream. Even if you don't feel like a significant piece in this puzzle -- you are! This wouldn't be possible if it weren't for each and every one of you.
Thank you. Thank you. Thank you!
