Comparative Genetics and Orthopaedic Laboratory at UW Veterinary Medicine We are a team of veterinarians and scientists working to advance the understanding of the genetics and progression of companion animal diseases.

We are always recruiting new participants for our studies. Inquiries please email [email protected] The work we do in the Comparative Genetics Laboratory leads to a better understanding of diseases that affect companion animals. We are currently working on advancing the understanding of canine cranial cruciate ligament rupture (also known as canine anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) rupture),

canine acquired laryngeal paralysis polyneuropathy (also known as laryngeal paralysis, LarPar, or GOLP), and equine degenerative suspensory ligament desmitis (DSLD). Understanding the genetics and progression of these diseases is a critical step toward the development of a genetic screening test and ultimately new drug treatments to help prevent or slow disease development. Many diseases in animals are very similar to human diseases. Canine ACL rupture is very similar to human ACL rupture; equine DSLD is similar to degenerative ligament diseases in people; and laryngeal paralysis is similar to Charcot Marie Tooth disease in humans. Understanding these diseases in animals will lead to a better understanding of disease in people, and can help develop treatments for both. DONATE

We are in search of German Shepherds with fibrotic myopathy that are able to come into our clinic. We are investigating a candidate gene we believe may play a role in this disease. We are also developing a genetic screening test for this disabling disease.
