Slander in the Dog Community: Why It Hurts Us All

In the dog world, reputation is everything. Breeders, handlers, judges, owners, and trainers spend years — sometimes decades — building trust in their lines, their kennels, and their name. But it only takes one careless comment, on a Facebook thread, or one ringside, or at a hunt test, a whisper to tear it down. That’s slander. And it’s poisoning our community.

What Slander Actually Looks Like in Dogs
Slander isn’t just “drama.” It’s making false, damaging statements about a person, kennel, or dog that you present as fact. In our circles, it shows up as:
• False health claims: “That kennel’s dogs all have bad hips” with no proof or OFA records
• Breeding accusations: “She’s using studs that throw aggression” based on one puppy
• Show and field politics: “That judge only puts up their friends” without evidence
• Personal attacks: Spreading rumors about finances, ethics, or family to discredit a competitor.

Gossip is bad enough. Slander crosses the line when it’s untrue and harms someone’s reputation or livelihood.
Why It’s So Detrimental to the Breed
1. It divides instead of improves
Every breed has challenges — health, temperament, structure. Fixing them takes collaboration. When we slander each other, breeders stop sharing data, stop mentoring, and stop co-owning. Information goes underground. The breed loses.
2. It destroys good programs
New breeders hear slander and avoid quality lines because “someone said” there’s an issue. Established breeders quit after years of harassment. We lose genetic diversity and institutional knowledge we can’t get back.
3. It turns puppy buyers away
Pet families Google a kennel name, find slander threads, and get scared. They go to a backyard breeder or pet store instead because “the purebred world is toxic.” We’re pushing people out of preservation breeding.
4. False “truths” become real
Repeat a lie enough and people believe it. “Everyone knows X kennel has epilepsy” becomes breed lore, even if there’s never been a documented case. Now the whole breed gets a reputation that impacts insurance, legislation, and public perception.
Disagreement Isn’t Slander — And That Matters
We can and should debate:
• Health testing protocols
• Structure and breed type
• Training methods
• Ethics in breeding practices
That’s how breeds improve. But there’s a difference between “I don’t agree with linebreeding that tight” and “They’re a puppy mill producing too many dogs.” One is opinion. The other is a false statement of fact that damages someone.
What To Do Instead
1. Verify before you repeat
Heard something? Ask for proof. Hips? Show me the OFA link. Temperament? Show me the video or bite take pictures. No proof = don’t share it.
2. Address issues directly
If you have a real concern about a breeder’s practices, talk to them. Or report to the parent club ethics committee. Public takedowns help nobody.
3. Promote your dogs, not by tearing down others
“Here’s why I love my lines” wins buyers and respect. “Here’s why that kennel is trash” makes you look insecure and drives people away.
4. Remember the end goal: the breed
Every hour we spend on slander is an hour not spent on health testing, mentoring, public education, or fighting anti-breeder legislation. We’re on the same team, even when we disagree.
Bottom Line
Slander is lazy. It’s easier to spread a rumor than to title a dog, health test a litter, or mentor a newbie. But it’s also counterproductive. You can’t slander your way to a better breed.
If we want our breed to survive the next 20 years — with sound bodies, stable temperaments, working ability, and a community people actually want to join — we have to do better. Tell the truth. Check the facts. And if you don’t have anything factual and helpful to say, let your dogs do the talking.

We are thrilled to announce that Hinckley(akaWinkie), CH Bowater's Permission To Come Aboard Evenkeel CGC, TKN qualified for a NCA ROM! We were so proud of her in the ring but her most important job was in the whelping box and what she has produced. We've been blessed with being able to watch and enjoy her puppies thrive as well as her grandkids! We thank all who had a hand in this recognition including our puppy families for loving our "kids" as we did while raising them. And to the sires who helped produce these litters.
Our profound thanks go to Deb & Carl Sylvester of Bowater Newfs who knew what we needed in Hinckley. She has sure put her stamp on her kids and now her grandkids and we couldn't be more grateful or proud. She's currently on the couch snoring- shes earned her spot there.

25 min drive turned into over 2 hours from horrible traffic had us literally skidding into the city with only 10 minutes prior to ring time. So grateful to our friends who helped us get to where we needed to be to get to the Newf ring with 10 seconds to spare so I was able to watch .

We are immensely proud of this guy for winning the breed at Westminster and more importantly, his temperament outside of the ring as seen below🥰 so grateful I got to get my snuggles in with him, my red puppy boy. Good boy Storm. Your mom watched you from her throne- the couch- barking at you on TV until she had to be removed because she almost pulled it off the wall 👀...life of a stage mom. We are beyond proud of this litter and can't describe the feeling of seeing them growing up doing what we had always hoped for while in the whelping box. Most importantly, healthy and well tempered. It was a true labor of love, Storm and his littermates are beyond special to us.
