Get a horse used to seeing different things out of their eye undersaddle.
A tarp for noise, a bear for movement.

In the past I would just get on first without any preparation of a rider.
I never had a horse buck the first ride, but had two get scared of noises or movement around the 10th ride.
I decided if I can prepare for that ahead of time, then our rides will have no issues and we can focus on training.

Noodle 🍜
I love pool noodles to train. You can stick them anywhere!

Carry the noodles.
Desensitize with the noodles.
Throw the noodles.

Body Carriage into Collection
Too many people say a horse is collected when its head is tucked in..
When you close the throatlatch the neck will scrunch at the 3rd vertebrae.

Vertically collecting a horse to get a horse soft to the bit for a few moments is fine, but making them hold that position disengages them.

You can tell if your horse is using his neck correctly if the underside of his throat is soft and loose!

What I have outlined are two important factors I look for:

🔴 Top: Horse is on forehand (back legs leave ground before fore legs), carrying neck average (which strengthens the bottom muscle), and feet are not tracking up (less engagement).

🟢 Bottom: Horse is balanced (diagnols leave together), lifting base of neck (strengthens the top crest and wither area), back feet match the front feet print- tracking up (engaged)

When I lunge or ride these are what I look for. I eventually want to develop a horse to Collection. Collection takes months if not years to create.

I would say he is currently in the middle of 2 to 3 on the dressage scale.

Steering! 🛞
My driving reins are attached to the halter while he learns how to pack the bit.

I want him to get used to taking directions without always seeing me in his eyes. I will be behind him like I would undersaddle. Some horses get worried when they can't see you.

Ground Drive Outside!
If you want your first rides to be successful outside the round pen, then you need to work them outside the roundpen.

Get these horses going forward, let them stretch out and explore then bring them back in.

Too many people only work their horses inside an arena.
Fortunately for me.. I don't have that!
So sunny, windy, or rain.. my horses get used to different environments scenarios.
Horses can tune out when in the same space too long. So make it different!
