KIBBLE VS. FRESH FOOD: YOU'RE ASKING THE WRONG QUESTION.

The kibble vs. fresh-food nutrition remains the reigning debate among pet parents.

“Is kibble bad?”

“Is fresh food better?”

“Should dogs eat raw?”

“Is cooked food destroying nutrients?”

“Are processed foods unnatural?”

While these questions are valid, they often oversimplify canine nutrition. And before anyone assumes where I stand, let me be very clear:

I strongly prefer and advocate for properly formulated fresh food, particularly appropriately balanced raw food, as the foundation for optimal canine nutrition. That is not because “natural” automatically means better. It is because I believe a diet built around appropriately selected, minimally-processed whole foods can provide significant nutritional advantages while more closely aligning with the biological characteristics of the canine digestive system.

However, there is an important distinction that gets lost in the kibble debate. A commerical food option can be nutritionally adequate without being what I consider optimal.

You read that correctly, a properly formulated commercial kibble can provide the nutrients required to sustain a dog. Dogs can live for many years eating kibble. That fact is undeniable. But longevity alone does not establish nutritional optimality.

And the same principle applies to fresh food. A bowl of chicken, vegetables, rice and supplements does not automatically become a superior diet simply because it is fresh.

A homemade diet can be beautifully prepared, full of whole foods and still be deficient or excessive in critical nutrients.

Evaluating the adequacy of a diet goes far beyond the question...

“Does this look healthy?”

Rather, we must question whether the diet is nutritionally complete.

✔️ Are ALL the essential nutrients present in appropriate amounts?

✔️ Are the calcium and phosphorus levels appropriate?

✔️ Are trace minerals adequately supplied?

✔️ Are essential fatty acids provided?

✔️ Are vitamins and minerals balanced?

✔️ How processed is the food?

✔️ How much moisture does it contain?

✔️ How digestible is it?

✔️ Is it appropriate for this particular dog's age, activity level, physiology and health status?

I really want to drive home this message home:

👉 The ingredient list is not the diet.

Nutrition is not simply about whether we recognize the ingredients, or even whether the ingredients are fresh. Nutrition is about nutrients. And this is exactly where I believe properly formulated fresh food has an important advantage.

Fresh food allows us to build the diet around whole-food ingredients while controlling the individual components of the nutritional profile rather than relying on a highly processed, shelf-stable matrix as the primary delivery vehicle.

Raw and gently prepared foods can also preserve the food's natural structure and moisture while minimizing the degree of processing. However, that does not make every raw diet good. It does not make every homemade diet balanced. And it certainly does not mean every fresh-food recipe found online is appropriate to feed.

Fresh does not automatically mean balanced.

But when fresh food is properly formulated to meet a dog's nutritional requirements, I believe it represents the superior nutritional model for supporting and maintaining optimal canine health. A distinction that matters!

I am not interested in telling pet parents...

“Kibble is poison.”

Nor am I interested in telling pet parents:

“If your dog eats kibble, you are not providing them with the best nutrition.”

Those statements do not advance canine nutrition.

Rather, I want pet parents to understand the difference between:

nutritionally adequate

and

nutritionally optimal.

I believe dogs deserve more than simply a food that can sustain them. They deserve a diet thoughtfully designed around their biology, nutritional requirements and individual needs.

This is why properly balanced fresh food, whether raw or appropriately prepared cooked, is the nutritional approach I advocate.

So let's have the conversation.

🐾 Canine Eye Health: What Your Dog’s Eyes Can Tell You About Their Health

Your dog’s eyes are remarkably complex organs, and when something goes wrong, the visible symptom is not always the disease itself.

Redness, discharge, cloudiness, squinting, excessive tearing, a change in pupil size, or a visible mass around the eye can have very different underlying causes. I believe we need to move beyond the simplistic idea that most eye problems can be treated with a “natural remedy.”

When we consider holistic care strategies, it is important to understand that it does not mean avoiding conventional medical intervention. Holism means considering and understanding the whole patient while utilizing the appropriate health care strategies when needed.

👁 With this understanding, let's take a look at some of the more common canine eye conditions:

Conjunctivitis
Inflammation of the conjunctiva can result from infection, environmental irritants, allergies, foreign bodies, dry eye, eyelid abnormalities, and other underlying disorders. Importantly, redness and discharge alone do not tell us the cause. A veterinary examination, and sometimes diagnostic testing, is necessary to determine appropriate treatment.

Corneal ulcers
A corneal ulcer is an actual defect in the corneal surface and can be painful and potentially vision-threatening. Trauma and foreign bodies are common causes, but underlying ocular disease can also contribute. Fluorescein staining is commonly used to identify an ulcer. Deeper or complicated ulcers may require surgical intervention.

This is one condition I would never recommend attempting to manage with home remedies alone.

Glaucoma
Glaucoma involves an abnormal increase in intraocular pressure that can damage the optic nerve and retina. Acute glaucoma can develop rapidly, causing severe pain and vision loss. It is an ophthalmic emergency and requires immediate veterinary attention.

Cataracts
A cataract is an opacity of the lens that interferes with the passage of light to the retina. Diabetes mellitus, genetics, inflammation, trauma, and other factors can contribute. Cataracts should be distinguished from nuclear sclerosis, a common age-related change that does not mean a dog is developing a cataract. When cataracts significantly impair vision, surgical removal of the lens remains the definitive treatment.

Cherry eye
Cherry eye is prolapse of the gland associated with the third eyelid. That red mass is not simply an infection; it is a displaced tear-producing gland. Because this gland contributes substantially to tear production, current veterinary guidance favors preserving and surgically replacing the gland rather than removing it.

Other eye conditions include: ▪️keratoconjunctivitis sicca (dry eye)
▪️uveitis
▪️retinal disease
▪️lens luxation
▪️eyelid abnormalities
▪️inherited ocular disorders
▪️ocular manifestations of systemic disease

It is important to understand that the eye is not an isolated organ. Metabolic and systemic disorders, including diabetes, hyperlipidemia, endocrine disease, inflammatory disease, and nutritional deficiencies, can have ocular manifestations.

🌿 Where does holistic care fit?

Right here.

Not as a replacement for ophthalmic medicine, rather as part of a strategy to support the biological systems upon which ocular health depends.

🥩 Start with the diet.

A properly formulated fresh-food diet can provide a broad spectrum of nutrients involved in cellular metabolism, antioxidant defense, immune function, tissue maintenance, and ocular physiology.

However, fresh food is not inherently nutritionally complete. A bowl of various meats and organs, vegetables, berries, and supplements does not automatically equate to a balanced diet.

A dog's eyes benefit from a properly formulated nutrition plan that meets their nutritional requirements without creating deficiencies or excesses.

I would like to point out several nutrients that are particularly interesting when discussing ocular health.

🟠 Vitamin E

Vitamin E is a lipid-soluble antioxidant that helps protect cell membranes from oxidative damage.

The retina is particularly metabolically active and rich in polyunsaturated fatty acids, making protection against oxidative injury biologically important.

Here is where we have actual canine evidence, not simply extrapolation from human nutrition.

Experimental vitamin E deficiency has produced retinal degeneration in dogs, and another study found markedly reduced alpha-tocopherol concentrations in dogs affected by retinal pigment epithelial dystrophy.

That does not mean that giving a dog large doses of vitamin E will prevent retinal disease, but it does mean that adequate vitamin E status matters significantly.

🐟 Omega-3 fatty acids

EPA and DHA are structural components of cell membranes and participate in inflammatory regulation.

They are particularly interesting in ocular health due to their roles in inflammatory signaling and membrane biology.

In a randomized canine study involving keratoconjunctivitis sicca, oral omega-3 supplementation used alongside topical tacrolimus improved several clinical parameters, with an EPA-rich preparation producing the most pronounced improvement in tear-film stability.

Another clinical study evaluated an antioxidant/anti-inflammatory nutraceutical diet alongside conventional therapy in dogs with immune-mediated dry eye and reported significant improvements in tear production, conjunctival inflammation, corneal keratinization, pigmentation, and mucus discharge.

It is important to point out that nutrition was used as an adjunct to ophthalmic treatment, not solely as a replacement for it.

🫐 Antioxidants

The retina is highly metabolically active and therefore particularly susceptible to oxidative stress.

Interestingly, a controlled study in healthy dogs found that six months of antioxidant supplementation produced measurable improvements in several electroretinographic responses, suggesting an effect on retinal function.

Again, this does not give us permission to claim that an antioxidant supplement “prevents blindness.” It does, however, give us a legitimate scientific basis for investigating adequate antioxidant nutrition as part of maintaining ocular health.

And this is precisely why I prefer a food-first, formulation-based approach rather than indiscriminately adding handfuls of supplements.

🌱 What about herbs?

There are botanicals with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties that may have a place in an individualized integrative plan.

But the evidence for herbal treatment of canine ocular disease is considerably less developed than the evidence for conventional ophthalmic therapies and nutritional support.

There is one rule, however, that I would strongly encourage every dog parent to remember. Do not put homemade herbal preparations, essential oils, teas, or other unsterile substances into your dog's eyes. The ocular surface is delicate, and “natural” does not automatically mean ophthalmically safe.

If an eye is red, painful, cloudy, swollen, suddenly producing discharge, being held closed, or showing a change in vision or pupil size, the first step is diagnosis, not experimentation.

🧬 The holistic perspective

I personally do not view conventional veterinary ophthalmology and holistic nutrition as opposing philosophies. I see them as different pieces of the same clinical picture.

A dog with a corneal ulcer may need topical medication and possibly surgery.

A dog with glaucoma needs rapid pressure control to protect vision and relieve pain.

A dog with cataracts may ultimately need surgical intervention.

A dog with cherry eye may need surgical replacement of the pr*****ed gland.

A dog with immune-mediated dry eye may require long-term immunomodulatory ophthalmic medication.

None of those realities make nutrition irrelevant. In fact, they make nutritional adequacy even more important.

Our goal should always be to give the body the raw materials it needs to maintain healthy tissues, regulate inflammation, support immune function, protect cellular membranes, and respond appropriately to physiological stress, while simultaneously addressing the actual ocular pathology.

And that is what I mean by holistic care.

Not replacing medicine with herbs. Not assuming that every disease can be fixed with food. And certainly not dismissing conventional veterinary care.

It means treating the eye when the eye needs treatment, and supporting the entire patient at the same time...because healthy eyes don't exist independently of a healthy body.

When we formulate nutrition properly, we aren't simply feeding a dog. We are supplying the biological building blocks that allow every tissue, including the eyes, to function as it was designed to.

🌿 Food first. Science always. Integrative care when appropriate. Veterinary medicine when necessary.

That is the approach I believe our dogs deserve.

🐾 Your Cat Is an Obligate Carnivore. What Does That Actually Mean?

Many pet parents describe dogs as carnivores. Technically, dogs are nutritionally facultative carnivores, or omnivorous. Their physiology allows them to obtain and utilize nutrients from a much broader range of foods.

Cats are different.

The cat is a true obligate carnivore.

Let's take a deep dive into obligate carnivory and discover what that actually means.

It's not as simplistic as cats “like meat.” It means that cats have evolved with specific metabolic pathways and nutritional requirements that make animal-derived nutrients a vital part of meeting their nutritional needs. This is exactly where feline nutrition gets fascinating.

🥩 Cats have a very high requirement for protein

Cats are metabolically adapted to a protein-rich diet. Unlike dogs and many other mammals, cats maintain relatively high activity of the enzymes involved in amino-acid metabolism even when dietary protein is reduced.

In other words, they do not simply “turn down” protein metabolism when less protein is available. Thus, this is one reason why adequate, high-quality protein is so important in feline nutrition.

Yet protein is certainly not the only story.

🫀 Taurine is essential

Cats cannot synthesize enough of the amino acid taurine to meet their needs. Therefore, taurine MUST come from the diet.

Taurine is essential for:

✔️ normal retinal function
✔️ cardiac function
✔️ reproduction and fetal development
✔️ bile acid conjugation

Taurine deficiency can result in retinal degeneration and potentially life-threatening heart disease. However, a “high in meat” diet does not automatically mean it contains adequate taurine.

Feline diets must be properly formulated, not simply assembled from meat.

🧬 Arginine is essential

Arginine is another fascinating example of feline metabolic specialization.

Cats have a high requirement for the amino acid arginine and have very limited ability to synthesize enough of it themselves.

Arginine is required for the urea cycle, which allows the body to safely convert toxic ammonia produced during amino-acid metabolism into urea for elimination. Because cats rely heavily on protein metabolism, this pathway is particularly important.

A severe arginine deficiency can cause rapid and potentially life-threatening hyperammonemia.

👁️ Cats need preformed vitamin A

Many animals, like dogs, can convert beta-carotene into vitamin A. Cats cannot efficiently do this.

They therefore require preformed vitamin A (retinol) in their diet.

This is one of the clearest examples of why we cannot simply take what works nutritionally for a dog, or a human, and assume it will work for a cat.

🧈 Cats require arachidonic acid

Cats also have a limited ability to synthesize arachidonic acid from linoleic acid, a fatty acid. Therefore, arachidonic acid is an essential dietary fatty acid for cats.

Arachidonic acid is involved in numerous physiological processes, including cell membrane structure and the production of important signaling molecules.

Again, this is a nutrient requirement that reflects a cat's unique metabolic biology.

💊 Cats have additional vitamin requirements

Cats also have nutritional peculiarities involving several B vitamins.

For example, cats cannot synthesize sufficient niacin from the amino acid tryptophan to meet their needs and therefore require dietary niacin.

They also have important dietary requirements for thiamine and vitamin B6. Thiamine is particularly interesting because raw fish containing the enzyme thiaminase can destroy thiamine, potentially creating a deficiency if fed improperly or in excessive amounts.

This is one of those examples why “raw” does not automatically mean “nutritionally complete.”

☀️ And...vitamin D is dietary

Cats have a limited ability to synthesize vitamin D through their skin compared with many other mammals.

Consequently, dietary vitamin D is important for maintaining calcium and phosphorus homeostasis and normal bone and cellular function.

Again, we see the same pattern. The feline metabolism is specialized.

🐱 The term “obligate carnivore” gets misunderstood.

Being an obligate carnivore does not mean:

❌ Feed nothing but muscle meat.

❌ Feed chicken breast and call it a complete diet.

❌ Assume an 80/10/10 recipe is automatically balanced.

❌ Assume that “more meat” means “more nutritious.”

❌ Assume cats can never digest plant-derived nutrients.

And it does not mean that every cat must eat raw food to survive.

Obligate carnivore means that the cat's nutritional requirements are fundamentally different from those of an omnivorous species; and those requirements must be met when formulating the diet.

A nutritionally complete feline diet still needs the appropriate amounts of protein, amino acids, fatty acids, vitamins, minerals, and other essential nutrients.

The fact that a food contains meat tells us very little about whether the finished diet is complete.

🥩 So…what about raw?

First, I want to make my own position clear.

I personally favor a properly formulated raw diet for healthy cats.

Why?

Because a cat's natural evolutionary diet consists primarily of whole animal prey, which provides not only muscle tissue, but organs, connective tissue, fat, minerals, water and a broad spectrum of nutrients.

That looks very different from simply feeding a bowl of random meat or 80/10/10 ratio meals.

Historical work such as Francis Pottenger's studies has also contributed to the long-standing interest in raw versus cooked diets. However, Pottenger's experiments have important methodological limitations and should not be treated as modern proof that raw food is universally superior.

I personally believe it is important to be intellectually honest about this. A properly formulated cooked diet can also meet a cat's nutritional requirements. Cooking does change nutrient availability as some nutrients can be reduced by heat. However, cooking can also improve digestibility or eliminate certain antinutritional factors that may be beneficial or even needed for some cats.

So my preference for raw does not mean that “raw” is a magic word.

The diet must still be nutritionally complete and appropriately formulated. And that distinction matters enormously.

The goal of pet parents should not simply be to feed their cat meat or even raw. The goal should only ever be to provide the nutrition that their cat's unique biology requires.

And that is what makes the feline obligate carnivore so fascinating.

🌿 Slippery Elm Bark for Dogs: What Does the Science Actually Tell Us?

If you spend any time in the fresh-food or raw-feeding community, you have probably heard of slippery elm bark. It is one of those herbs that seems to have earned a permanent place in the “keep this on hand for your dog” category, particularly when transitioning from kibble to a fresh or raw diet.

Let's take a look at what slippery elm actually does and learn how it may, or may not, benefit your dog.

What is the science behind slippey elm's reputation?

🌿 What is slippery elm bark?

Slippery elm comes from the inner bark of the slippery elm tree, Ulmus rubra, a North American tree traditionally used as a botanical demulcent.

Its most important characteristic is its high content of mucilage, a group of complex, water-attracting polysaccharides. When the powdered bark comes into contact with water, these polysaccharides swell and form a viscous, gel-like material. That physical property is central to how slippery elm is thought to work.

🧬 What does the mucilage actually do?

Slippery elm is classified as a demulcent.

A demulcent is a substance that can form a soothing, protective layer over irritated mucous membranes. Importantly, its potential effects are not limited to the stomach.

The gastrointestinal tract is lined with mucosal surfaces from the esophagus through the stomach and intestines. The hydrated mucilage can interact with these surfaces as it moves through the digestive tract. This mucilaginous botanical can provide temporary physical and functional support to irritated GI tissues.

There is also another interesting component to consider. It is a source of soluble, viscous fiber. That means slippery elm can influence the physical characteristics of intestinal contents, including water handling and stool consistency.

This helps explain why it has traditionally been used for both loose stool and constipation, although that does not mean it is an established treatment for either condition.

🐕 Where might slippery elm be useful?

Based on its traditional use, pharmacology, and the limited available evidence, slippery elm may be worth considering as supportive care for mild, uncomplicated gastrointestinal irritation, including:

✔️ transient loose stool
✔️ mild digestive upset
✔️ dietary-transition-associated GI irritation
✔️ mild constipation in some circumstances
✔️ irritation of the upper gastrointestinal tract
✔️ situations in which a soothing, mucilaginous fiber may be beneficial

Veterinary herbal medicine references describe slippery elm as traditionally used for gastrointestinal irritation, colitis, diarrhea, and convalescence.

There is also limited human research suggesting that formulations containing slippery elm may improve certain gastrointestinal symptoms; however, this is where responsible nutrition education needs to draw an important line.

🔬 Traditional use ≠ clinical proof

1. Slippery elm has a very plausible mechanism.

2. Its mucilage clearly forms a viscous material when hydrated.

3. It has a long history of traditional use.

4. There are laboratory and preliminary human data investigating antioxidant and gastrointestinal effects.

Unfortunately, we do not have large, high-quality clinical trials demonstrating that slippery elm independently treats diarrhea, inflammatory bowel disease, “leaky gut,” ulcers, or other gastrointestinal diseases, particularly in dogs.

In fact, much of the human clinical research has involved multi-ingredient formulas, making it impossible to determine how much of the observed benefit came from slippery elm itself. And canine-specific evidence is considerably more limited.

Don't get me wrong, that doesn't make slippery elm useless. It means we should put it in the correct category as a potentially useful supportive herb, but not a GI cure-all.

🌱 What about the microbiome?

Because slippery elm contains complex polysaccharides and soluble fiber, it is reasonable to ask whether some of its components could interact with the intestinal microbiota. There is biological rationale for mucilaginous fibers influencing microbial fermentation and the intestinal environment.

Unfortunately, we cannot definitively say that slippery elm “balances the microbiome” or “repairs dysbiosis” beyond what the current evidence allows us to conclude.

The same applies to claims that it “heals leaky gut.”

There are interesting mechanistic findings surrounding mucilage, oxidative stress, and intestinal barrier function, but mechanistic or laboratory findings are not equivalent to demonstrating a clinical benefit in dogs...a distinction that is important.

🐾 What about using it when transitioning from kibble to raw?

This is probably where slippery elm gets the most attention in the raw-feeding community.

A dog experiencing loose stool during a dietary transition may potentially benefit from the soothing and fiber-related properties of slippery elm. However, I would never recommend using slippery elm as a substitute for investigating why a dog is having diarrhea.

A sudden dietary change, excessive dietary fat, a large increase in fermentable substrates, inappropriate bone intake, excessive food volume, food intolerance, parasites, infection, or an underlying gastrointestinal disorder can all produce digestive symptoms. In these situations, slippery elm may potentially help support the GI tract while it settles.

What it will not do is make an inappropriate diet appropriate. And it should not be used to mask persistent or significant gastrointestinal disease.

⚠️ A few important considerations

Because slippery elm produces a viscous mucilage, it should be cautioned when giving it at the same time as medications or supplements whose absorption is important. Spacing it away from oral medications is a prudent approach.

And while slippery elm is generally considered well tolerated, “natural” does not automatically mean appropriate for every dog. Persistent diarrhea, vomiting, blood in the stool, black/tarry stool, abdominal pain, dehydration, weight loss, or other concerning signs warrant veterinary evaluation rather than simply adding an herb.

🌿 So…is slippery elm worth having?

Yes...potentially.

While I do not consider slippery elm a miracle herb, I do consider its pharmacology interesting enough to make it a reasonable botanical to understand and potentially keep available for occasional, mild gastrointestinal upset, provided the underlying cause is not being overlooked.

Its greatest strength may actually be its simplicity:

mucilage + soluble fiber + a plausible demulcent effect = potentially useful GI support.

This is a scientifically defensible statement rather than the blanket claim that slippery elm “heals the gut.”

And perhaps that is the most important is that we do not need to exaggerate what a natural substance can do in order to appreciate what it may genuinely offer.

🌿 Slippery elm (Ulmus rubra) may be a useful tool in the canine GI-support toolbox, but it is a tool, not a treatment for every digestive problem.

If Kibble Is So Bad, Why Do Some Dogs Live Long Lives?

A client asked me a question yesterday that I believe deserves a serious, science-based answer and discussion.

My client has been feeding her dog a raw diet because, like many pet parents, she genuinely believes she is choosing the better, more health-promoting option. However, she has observed something that does not fit neatly into the usual "kibble vs. fresh food" narrative:

She knows of many dogs, past and present, who consume kibble and have lived very long, healthy lives.

So naturally, she asked me if her decision to feed a raw diet was actually the right decision.

This is a question that deserves more attention. It highlights an important fact that is frequently misunderstood in canine nutrition:

Dogs don't require "fresh food." They require nutrients.

Does this surprise you? Truthfully, the body does not "care" whether zinc came from beef, a mineral premix, or another ingredient. It doesn't care whether vitamin E came from a whole food or was supplemented. And it doesn't care whether calcium came from a bone or seaweed calcium.

A dog's physiology requires adequate amounts of essential nutrients, in appropriate proportions, every day. PERIOD.

That is the foundation of nutrition...and where kibble teaches us something important.

A properly formulated complete-and-balanced commercial diet is, fundamentally, a nutrient-delivery system. The manufacturer formulates the food to provide required nutrients at specified concentrations for the intended life stage.

That means a dog eating the same complete diet every day can receive a nutritionally adequate diet without every individual meal containing a perfectly balanced assortment of muscle meat, organs, vegetables, eggs, fish and supplements.

The formulation has already done that mathematical work.

Truth be told, that is one reason dogs can, and do, live long lives eating commercial diets.

Now don't get me wrong! Their longevity does not prove that kibble is inherently superior. But it absolutely demonstrates that the format of the food is not the determining factor in nutritional adequacy.

Now consider the homemade raw diet.

My client's diet was made from foods that many people would consider exceptionally nutritious.

✔️ It was fresh.
✔️ It was raw
✔️ It consisted of human-grade meats
✔️ The quality of ingredients were exceptional
✔️ It looked wholesome

But when I analyzed the recipe, it was severely deficient in every mineral and deficient in most vitamins.

That is not a theoretical problem.

That is a nutritional problem.

This is honestly where I wish pet parents would stop confusing fresh food and ingredient quality with nutritional completeness.

A diet can contain excellent fresh ingredients and still fail to provide the nutrients required to maintain normal physiology and to produce longevity.

A bowl of fresh food is NOT a nutrient profile, and it is certainly not a formulation.

A recipe containing meat, organs, raw meaty bones, vegetables and berries may look nutritionally impressive, but appearance tells us almost nothing about whether the diet supplies adequate:

▪️ Phosphorus
▪️ Zinc
▪️ Copper
▪️ Manganese
▪️ Iodine
▪️ Selenium
▪️ Iron
▪️ Vitamin A
▪️ Vitamin D
▪️ Vitamin E
▪️ B vitamins
▪️ Essential fatty acids
▪️ And numerous other required nutrients

It also does not tell us whether those nutrients are present in appropriate amounts relative to one another. This is known as nutrient ratios. Ratios are vitally important for nutrient absorption potential.

Nutritional formulation matters!

"But my dog looks healthy."

I hear this all too frequently...and I understand why.

A dog can have beautiful eyes, a shiny coat, excellent energy and normal stools while a diet is nutritionally inadequate. Understand that some nutritional deficiencies don't produce dramatic clinical signs immediately. The body also has adaptive mechanisms and stores for certain nutrients.

Clinical disease can therefore be the late manifestation of a nutritional problem, rather than the first indication that something was wrong. This is the reason why nutritional science cannot be reduced to:

"My dog has eaten this for years and seems fine."

While that observation is meaningful, it is not a nutrient analysis.

This may surprise pet parents...

I am not arguing that kibble is automatically better than fresh food, rather I am demonstrating something much less controversial:

A nutritionally complete commercial diet is preferable to an unbalanced homemade diet.

Period.

If someone feeds kibble that meets established nutrient requirements, their dog may be receiving adequate nutrition.

If someone feeds a homemade raw or cooked diet that is severely deficient in calcium, zinc, iodine, vitamin D, vitamin E and other nutrients, calling it "fresh" does not correct those deficiencies.

Freshness cannot compensate for missing nutrients.

That said, "complete and balanced" does not mean "perfect." This distinction matters, too.

Nutritional adequacy is the foundation, not necessarily the ceiling.

There are legitimate reasons someone may choose a properly formulated fresh-food diet.

Fresh foods provide different nutrient matrices, fatty acids, amino acids, minerals, vitamins and biologically active compounds. Diets can also be customized around an individual dog's energy requirements, preferences, gastrointestinal tolerance and specific medical circumstances.

But once a pet parent chooses homemade feeding, they inherit the responsibility for nutritional formulation.

That's the trade-off.

You don't get to remove the formulation requirements simply because the ingredients are fresh.

This is why I am so persistent about nutrient saturation.

When I formulate a canine diet, I am not asking if a dog looks healthy. I am questioning whether the diet actually meets that specific dog's physiological requirements.

‼️That means evaluating the diet quantitatively, not aesthetically.

It means looking at nutrient concentrations, energy density, life stage, body weight, essential nutrient requirements, mineral relationships and the individual dog's circumstances.

Because ultimately:

A dog eats food.

The body uses nutrients.

Those are related, but they are not the same thing.

My client's question really motivated me to think about the overall "kibble vs. fresh" argument.

Perhaps the better concern is not which type of diet is best, rather we should be concerned more about which diet is actually providing the nutrients each individual dog requires in the amounts that are optimal to produce stellar health and longevity.

A diet does not become nutritionally complete simply because we put fresh ingredients in the bowl.

And kibble does not become nutritionally inadequate simply because it came out of a bag.

The science is in the nutrient profile, not the marketing category.

And that is exactly why I will continue to strongly advocate for properly formulated raw and cooked diets.

Not simply because they are fresh, but...

because they are nutritionally complete.

Your dog needs nutrients. Give the nutrients the credit.
