For over seventy years, the Lynchburg Humane Society has operated as a private, non-profit organization, caring for lost and homeless pets. Last year, our Lynchburg Center for Pets cared for 3,811 pets and 93% of the pets went to new or existing homes. We are a 501c3, as well as a No Kill Humane Society, where we firmly believe that no healthy or treatable pet should be euthanized. By operating the public shelter for the City of Lynchburg, we accept the lost or unwanted pets surrendered to us from those communities. We help pets at risk for euthanasia at other shelters by transferring them into our care. Last year, 885 pets were brought to safety at LHS from other shelters. We accept those that are easily adoptable as pets, as well as those that need special nurturing from abusive or neglectful experiences. Along with our Center for Pets, we also have a regional spay/neuter clinic which performs over 6,000 spay/neuter surgeries annually It is the help of the community that makes our life-saving programs possible. Mission: Help pets in need through sheltering, adoption, education, spay/neuter, and community outreach.

Everyone, meet Maple.

Maple is 6.5-years old. Maple is a very soft cuddly cat who loves cat trees, toys, her cat bed and wet food. She loves to exclusively use scratch pads/poles and especially loves string toys. Maple will eat just about any food, especially seafood flavors. She rarely scratches, bites, or hisses at people, animals or kids.

Meet Fonzie 🩷

Fonzie is a very sweet (and gorgeous) girl who was transferred to our shelter back in July. Fonzie lived in a home for 10 years and was surrendered to another shelter for unknown reasons. At 10 years old we sent her to foster because the shelter can be a stressful place after only living in one home for so long.

Whatever the reason for surrender, it wasn’t because of Fonzie because she is great! Her fosters say she is a very sweet and VERY cuddly lady. She has no behavior issues (unless you count a bit of drool when she’s very content) and is the ultimate lap cat! She also loves a bit of Churu.

We have some exciting positions open at the Lynchburg Humane Society!

We are seeking 2 management positions. Our Shelter Health Manager and Pet Care Manager.

Pet Care Manager:
This position leads our Pet Care Department, supervises staff, manages daily workflow, and helps ensure our shelter pets receive excellent care every day. The ideal candidate has strong leadership skills, experience managing people and operations, and a passion for animal welfare. Shelter experience is preferred but not required. You’ll work alongside a dedicated team to provide a clean, safe, enriching environment for dogs, cats, and small animals.

Shelter Health Manager:
We are seeking an experienced veterinary or shelter medicine professional to lead our Medical Department. This hands-on leadership role combines staff management and daily operations with direct patient care and collaboration with our veterinary team. The Shelter Health Manager oversees medical staff, treatment plans, medications, inventory, medical records, and disease control, helping ensure that every pet receives timely, compassionate care. Veterinary or shelter medicine experience and strong leadership skills are required.

Meet Mickey and Sparky, two adorable boys just looking for some love!

These two, as similar as they look, are not siblings! They just spend their days together keeping each other company and cuddling together! Sparky is the more social of the two and loves making new friends, while Mickey is a bit little more shy, but don’t worry he warms up quick! Both have plenty of love to give and are just waiting for the right person to give them a chance.

They're both 5 months old, up to date on their vaccines, microchipped, and Mickey is already neutered.

Whether you're looking for a playful, outgoing friend or a quieter companion, Mickey or Sparky could be the perfect addition to your home! And as always, if you adopt two cats/kittens the second one’s adoption fee is 50% off!

Everybody, meet Nikko!

Nikko is 4-years old. Nikko is the biggest people dog you’ll ever meet! He is a bundle of joy and energy. He loves car rides and a good chew toy. He loves to run around but also loves a good nap. Beware he snores like a 70 year old man. Nikko is a loving pup who would absolutely love to meet you! Nikko prefers to be the only pet in the home as he is just a sucker for all of the attention he can get.

Well if you saw today’s segment on Living in the Heart of Virginia-LHOV and are wondering who the lucky person that gets to take home Nod (and his special box) is, his new parent was MUCH closer than we realized!!

For his entire 10 minute segment Nod NEVER stopped making biscuits. He made biscuits on his cardboard box, he made biscuits on his blankie, he made biscuits on George the weatherman, it was the cutest thing to witness.

So naturally after recording, a few of the other WSET staff had to come say hi. At one point during cuddles, Nod actually paused his biscuit making, walked over to one of them on the couch, curled up beside him and then resumed making biscuits. Christian, the chosen staff member, was not in the market for a pet, but HOW could he say no. With a little convincing from the room he decided to place Nod on hold and then picked him up the very next day!

Remember Jean Gray from our super hero group? Many of her siblings have been adopted, but Jean Gray has hung back a little longer because she was the most nervous out of her 10 siblings.

This week we had a huge breakthrough!! We knew that Jean Gray loved other dogs and became entirely different herself when she was around them. So when looking for a foster home for her that was our top priority. But what we did not expect was when Jean Gray found a foster home last week with another dog, that she would also immediately do amazing with the cat in the home and instantly attach herself to the young children as well!!

After weeks of cowering from strangers, it took less than 24 hours in a foster home before Jean was walking the little kids out to their bus stop full of confidence in the mornings. This family could foster for the week despite loving Jean Gray, but they are so happy that they were able to get so much helpful information on her to get her into her new home. Everybody, meet Valentine!

Valentine is 5.5-years old. Valentine will have a conversation with you if you meow too! He likes to snuggle, especially in small "nest" type situations, definitely on your lap with a blanket. Valentine likes to play, but has a short attention span. He will leap and jump and have fun, especially with a string. He has a loud purr and it gets the loudest when you rub under his chin or behind his ear. Valentine is already neutered. Valentine has done fairly well with children and dogs in the home.
