(1014)

For over seventy years, the Lynchburg Humane Society has operated as a private, non-profit organization, caring for lost and homeless pets. Last year, our Lynchburg Center for Pets cared for 3,811 pets and 93% of the pets went to new or existing homes. We are a 501c3, as well as a No Kill Humane Society, where we firmly believe that no healthy or treatable pet should be euthanized. By operating th

e public shelter for the City of Lynchburg, we accept the lost or unwanted pets surrendered to us from those communities. We help pets at risk for euthanasia at other shelters by transferring them into our care. Last year, 885 pets were brought to safety at LHS from other shelters. We accept those that are easily adoptable as pets, as well as those that need special nurturing from abusive or neglectful experiences. Along with our Center for Pets, we also have a regional spay/neuter clinic which performs over 6,000 spay/neuter surgeries annually It is the help of the community that makes our life-saving programs possible. Mission: Help pets in need through sheltering, adoption, education, spay/neuter, and community outreach.

This Wishlist Wednesday, we need toys and linens! We are low on beds, towels, blankets, cat and dog toys!

Have an overflowing linen closet? Got toys your pet isn't interested in anymore? Beds they refuse to sleep in?

Our pets will gladly take them! These essentials are a vital factor of our pets' well-being here at the Center! We are currently most in need of toys, towels, blankets, and pet beds. We are not in need of bed pillows, sheets, or pillowcases at the moment.

Any donations can be dropped off in the donation bins at the Center for Pets during our open hours, or if you're an early bird or night owl, you can drop them outside of our front doors. Our pets greatly appreciate it!
If you'd like to mail the pets some brand new toys, our Amazon Wishlist can be accessed here: https://a.co/0jlLnHxJ

Our partnership with PetSmart is back, and we're kicking it off this Saturday with a PetSmart Charities at the Lynchburg PetSmart location in the Wards Road shopping center, next to Target!

This Saturday we will be taking kittens and puppies to PetSmart from 12pm to 2:30pm for an adoption special! Kittens in attendance will have their adoption fees reduced to $75. An additional $35 deposit for spay/neuter appointments will apply for unaltered pets (refunded after surgery).

If you're going to be shopping this Saturday and a kitten happens to be on your list stop by to see us!

A few weeks ago, Chonk was found on the side of the road. His body was weak, and it became clear right away why. On top of fleas, ticks, an infection in his eyes, and malnourishment, there was a gaping wound on his leg stretching over his hips down to his abdomen. The wound had begun to fester and was infested with maggots.

Little Chonk only weighed one pound, and his temperature was dangerously low. Any additional time fending for himself outside could have been deadly to this tiny, injured kitten.

First, our medical team got his temperature up in our Bair Hugger machine. This is an essential first step in emergency care for pets this small. Afterward, they administered fluids, cleaned his wound, and portioned out small amounts of food. Then, he spent the night with the caring staff at Animal Emergency & Critical Care of Lynchburg for observation and care.

Chonk's wound has been sutured closed, and his care includes antibiotics, flea/tick prevention, and fluids. Chonk's wound has weakened his muscles, limiting his mobility. Thankfully, with the help from a wonderful foster family, he is working on getting his footing back. Chonk has come such a long way from a seriously injured little kitten that we weren't sure would make it through the night. Even now, he still has so much healing and treatment ahead of him.

Thanks to his amazing foster family, our wonderful staff, and you, we are able to keep fighting for Chonk's second chance at a happy and healthy life.

Remember Bodhi, who went to last week?! He's still available for adoption and wanted to introduce himself again!

Hey there, I'm Bodhi—a spry fellow born in North Carolina and raised in Northern Virginia. I just moved here last spring with my owner, who passed away suddenly in the middle of May. I was heartbroken and confused, but stayed with him until help arrived.

You could say I am a husky's husky. I'm active and social, and beneath my handsome white coat, you will find a curious, loving and loyal companion.

My favorite things to do are nature walks and romping with my friends at the dog park. This isn't to say I don't love a good afternoon nap, though. There's nothing like sprawling in a cool spot after a fun day out.

If you can give me a solid daily routine with plenty of exercise, I will not only be your buddy for life, but I will keep you in excellent shape as well.

Stop by the Center for Pets to meet Bodhi anytime during our open hours or email [email protected] with any questions!
