Some elephants at the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust nursery in Nairobi National Park can't fall asleep unless a keeper lies beside them.

Most of these calves arrive frightened and alone after losing their mothers and herds. Some are also dehydrated, underfed, or injured, leaving them in desperate need of comfort and care.

So every night, a keeper sleeps beside each calf until morning.

They offer reassurance, watch for any change in the elephant’s condition, and make sure the calf never wakes up feeling alone.

The keepers rotate regularly so the elephants learn to trust several people rather than becoming attached to only one. Even then, the bond between them is deeply tender.

By day, the calves head into Nairobi National Park for what staff call bush school.

There, they play with other elephants, learn which plants to eat, and discover the joy of rolling in a proper mud bath.

Little by little, the frightened calves begin to relax. They form friendships, grow stronger, and learn how to be elephants again.

With someone beside them at night and a new herd waiting each morning, fear slowly gives way to confidence.
