Never Forget.
25 years ago today, nearly 3,000 lives were taken. We remember the victims, the first responders who ran toward danger, and the heroes of Flight 93.
May we honor them by how we live.

A fun fact about barrel racing:

Started in Texas: The sport began in Samford, Tx. in 1928 as a way for woman to compete in rodeos.

Figure-Eight Beginnings: Early versions used just two barrels arranged in a figure-eight pattern before the three-barrel cloverleaf became the standard.

Founded in 1948: The girls Rodeo Association was formed to make barrel racing an official sport.

Rules and Scoring

Timed to the thousandth: Times are recorded down to thousandths of a second.

Five-second penalty: Knocking over a barrel adds a 5-second penalty to the total time.

Disqualifications: Breaking the pattern or falling off results in immediate disqualification.

The 4D system: Competitions often use a 4D rating system to split riders into divisions by time, allowing more participants to win prizes.

Horses and Gear

Top Breed: American Quarter Horses dominate the sport because of their fast acceleration and sharp turning ability.

Special Saddles: Riders use lightweight saddles with high seats and forward stirrups to stay balanced during sharp turns.
