Because social media usually only shows the highlights, here’s a little reality check/update on Sheik.
After winning this big guy last year, he finally came home to me in March. Since then, our progress has been slow—but that’s okay.
He may be big, powerful, and intimidating on the outside, but underneath it all is a horse who’s simply scared.
On his good days, he’ll let me halter him, rub his face, and pet him all the way down his neck and chest. On the harder days, he only tolerates a few touches on his face. And honestly? For an 11-year-old formally wild mustang, that’s incredible progress. Every small win matters.
He definitely has a stubborn streak (which explains exactly where his daughter, Shai, gets hers from 😅), but beneath that is a horse who tries. Every single day, he chooses to trust just a little bit more.
We’re only at the very beginning of our journey together. There will be setbacks, slow days, and moments where it feels like we’re standing still. But there will also be breakthroughs—and those are the moments worth waiting for.
I also finally settled on his registered name: SS A Slow Dance. It couldn’t fit him better. Building trust with Sheik has never been about rushing.
I love this boy with my whole heart, and no matter how long it takes, I’ll be here, earning his trust one small step at a time.🖤
