Almost Home: Nelson Co SPCA We are open to the public from 11a.m. to 6p.m. daily! Strays continue to go through the Animal Control Facility until their "stray hold" is up.

As a 501(c)3 "No-Kill" facility, our mission is to improve animal welfare by providing care and adoption of "unwanted" companion animals in Nelson County, Virginia. The Humane Society/SPCA of Nelson County (HS/SPCA) strives to improve animal welfare by providing care and adoption of "unwanted" companion animals through: our "no-kill" adoption center, foster care networks, satellite adoption venues, and Kitten & Puppy Rescue/Transport Programs; by funding veterinary services and education programs; and, by controlling over-population through low-cost Spay-Neuter-Vaccinate and Feral Cat Trap/Neuter/Release programs. Our goal is to extend the no-kill philosophy throughout our county, so that no healthy, non-aggressive animal is euthanized. Animals being surrendered by their owners are accepted on a space available basis, if they are judged to be adoptable. Animals are also selected from unclaimed or unwanted animals at the Nelson County Animal Control Facility after they are evaluated by the SPCA and judged to be adoptable. No animal will be put down unless it is judged to be dangerously aggressive or untreatably ill. The HS/SPCA (also known as the Almost Home Pet Adoption Center) now has several part-time employees but still relies heavily on volunteer help. Because of our efforts here at Almost Home, thousands of animals have been saved and are now living in permanent homes.

🐾 TWO SENIOR BOYS, STILL WAITING FOR THEIR FOREVER HOMES 🐾

Meet Monacan and Aki! These two handsome senior boys have been at the Nelson SPCA for quite some time, patiently waiting for someone to give them the one thing they want most, a place to call home.

🐶 MONACAN | 12 YEARS OLD:

Monacan is a handsome heeler mix who is a simple guy with simple pleasures. He loves to nap, eat his dinner, take a short walk outside, tear up a stuffy toy, and then settle in for another nap. He doesn’t need much to make him happy. Any cozy spot where he can relax and feel safe will do just fine!

Monacan is the kind of guy who would be perfectly content spending his days enjoying the simple things in life.

🐶 AKI | 9 YEARS OLD:

Aki is a handsome German Shepherd/Husky mix who still has a lot of adventure left in him! This boy loves hiking and would make a wonderful companion for someone who enjoys getting outside and exploring the world with their best friend.

Aki is looking for a home where he can be the one and only pet, soaking up all the love and attention for himself. He has so much to offer and deserves a family who will give him the chance to enjoy his golden years surrounded by love.

Both of these boys have spent far too long waiting for their people to find them.

Senior dogs are so often overlooked, but they have so much love left to give. They deserve soft beds, peaceful days, full bellies, and a family who will cherish them for the rest of their lives.

We dream of the day Monacan and Aki get to walk out of our shelter doors and into homes of their very own!

Please SHARE their faces. Their forever families might be out there, just waiting to find them. 🐾

If you are interested in adopting Aki or Monacan, please submit an application on our website: Nelsonspca.org

We are open 11-6 daily if you would like to visit them!

Despite the rain, it was a pleasure to spend time at Basic Necessities today with three lovely animals, Monacan, Finn and Sawyer. The food and service was amazing and there were even special French dog treats for Monacan.

Meet Bandit – The Adoptable Hound of the Week

Bandit is an almost 2-year-old hound who has been waiting for his forever family for almost a year. This handsome boy has so much life ahead of him, and we would love to see him finally experience the joy of having a home of his own.

Bandit is a sweet, sometimes shy boy who absolutely loves other dogs. Having a canine friend may be a wonderful way for him to build confidence and feel more comfortable as he learns about the world around him. Before coming to us, Bandit spent his life living on a chain. That means the simple things that many dogs take for granted — having a soft bed, exploring a yard, relaxing in a home, and being part of a family — will all be brand new experiences for him.

Bandit will need someone who is willing to be patient and understanding as he learns what being a loved family dog is all about. We think watching him discover all those new experiences for the first time will be incredibly rewarding.

Bandit is located in Lovingston, Virgina and is under the care of Almost Home: Nelson Co SPCA. His adoption fee has been sponsored. Please contact the rescue for further information.

Each week the CC team features a hound in rescue waiting for their furever home. Please share and thanks for your support.
