Nose Work folks - Have you ever thought about the fact that a container hide is actually inaccessible? We typically define an inaccessible hide as one where the dog can't get their nose right on source, so they have to learn to communicate with the handler when they are as close as they can get to the source. These types of hides are typically harder for the handler to read, because the dog is less certain! That's why we are holding a Sniff and Go where all the hides are inaccessible, to give you lots of opportunities to learn to read your dog with a variety of different inaccessible hides.

Join us for our upcoming Community Swap mutual aid event on Sunday Sept 27th from 1-5 pm!

Accepted items:
- Dog, cat, & small animal supplies
- Pet food in its original container/bag (if opened, it must be taped/secured and within the expiration date)
- Human clothing/gear

Restrictions:
- Prescriptions
- Medical supplies that pose a safety risk (needles, anything previously opened/unsealed)
- Food that requires refrigeration must be brought in a cooler and checked regularly
- Anything with derogatory, bigoted, or disturbing language and imagery
- Broken or dirty items (needing a quick rinse/wipe down is ok)

Dogs are welcome, and we have a crating room if you need to bring your dog but they would struggle with the environment while you are swapping! We may ask you to give your dog a break in your car or offer an alternative if we notice they are having a hard time during the event.

Anything left over will be donated to The Street Dog Coalition , Colorado Pet Pantry, Splash lgbtqia+ Youth, and Alternatives to Violence. If you would like to bring items specifically for these vital community resources, please check the links in the event description for what they need and we will have a specific area marked off for donations during the swap!

Have you ever been told that you coddle your dog too much? That the way you treat your dog is the cause (or will be the cause) of their separation anxiety?

There is a widespread belief that loving on your dog when you get home or allowing them to sleep in your bed, be on the couch, and follow you around causes separation anxiety. People are even told to stop doing those things if their dog has or develops separation anxiety. But the truth is, that belief is a myth. Loving on your dog and letting them be with you and sleep with you will not cause separation anxiety or prevent progress as you work through separation anxiety.

A study done by Elizabeth McCrave MS in 1991 showed no significant difference between dogs with/without separation anxiety and how their owners treated them. If you think about it, removing all of those “coddling” behaviors and activities when your dog is experiencing anxiety and panic would have the opposite result. Imagine you’re experiencing anxiety and panic over a project and all of a sudden everyone around you starts ignoring you and takes away tools that will help you both succeed with the project and cope with the anxiety. Would that have a positive impact on your mental health? It would not only increase your anxiety about that project but it would also create problems in other aspects of your life. Dogs suffering from separation anxiety would be similarly affected.
