🧔🐑🐶 Happy World Beard Day! 🐶🐑🧔

Some beards are grown. Some are inherited. And some are simply part of the job description! 😂

Today, we're tipping our hats (and scratching a few chins) to two animals who take their facial hair VERY seriously:

🐶 The Bearded Collie
Affectionately known as the “Beardie,” this shaggy Scottish herding breed is famous for its long, flowing coat, including the distinctive hair framing its face. Originally bred to work sheep and cattle, Beardies are energetic, intelligent and enthusiastic herders.

🐑 The Bearded Sheepdog
Wait… a sheep dog? Not quite! The Bearded Sheep is a breed of sheep known for its distinctive long hair around the face and chin, giving it a wonderfully whiskered appearance. Talk about taking “beard” to the next level! 🧔🐑

So whether you're a Beardie with a magnificent mane or a sheep sporting serious chin whiskers, today is your day!

The Ruby-Throated Hummingbirds are on the move - When should I take down my hummingbird feeder?

Today is National Hummingbird Day, and for good reason.....these feisty little birds are at their feistiest this week, preparing for the long trip back home.

As the days get shorter, hummingbirds feel the instinctual pull south. Even the newly hatched fledglings instinctively know to stock up on calories and head for the Texas border and eventually Mexico, then all the way to Central America.

SO, WHEN SHOULD YOU STOP FEEDING HUMMINGBIRDS IN LOUISVILLE?

Contrary to popular thought, leaving your hummingbird feeders up during the winter migration will not encourage the tiny fliers to stay up-north.

It is the shortening of the days and the lack of sunlight which prompts migration, so even an abundance of food will not keep your hummingbirds in your backyard.

However, hummingbirds typically create migration habits, even stopping by the same feeding stations year after year during their long southward (and northward) trek.

In Louisville, any hummingbirds to visit your feeders after Labor Day are most likely visitors from the North and not the hummingbirds who frequented your stations during the Summer.

So, if you want to get return visitors, avian experts recommend keeping your hummingbird feeder up as long as possible - until danger of freezing is present.

Autumn is almost here: What do pet owners need to know?

Fall is on the horizon, so what are the important things to consider when thinking about Fall pet safety?

TICKS: Although tick nymphs peak in the spring months, the number of adult deer ticks is higher in the fall than it is during any other part of the year. Deer ticks are the ticks that are responsible for spreading Lyme disease—which can be just as much of a danger for you as it is for your pet. If you're worried you might have a tick problem, there are several things you can do to help.

A tick and flea preventative will help keep the bugs away, but if you don't choose to use them, consider paying more attention to your lawn care. Ticks prefer to live in long grass, so giving your lawn a good manicure, and keeping your pets confined, can help keep your tick problem under control.

TEMPERATURE: Fall is a tough time for pet care because the temperature is so variable. During the transition season, you may need to worry about anything from heatstroke to frostbite.

In particular, you'll always want to make certain that your dog or cat has enough water. Just because the weather has gotten cooler doesn't mean that your pet doesn't still need a lot to drink. AND, NEVER LEAVE DOG UNATTENDED IN A CAR FOR ANY REASON.

GROOMING: Finally, fall is a good time to remember that keeping your pet's coat in good shape isn't just a matter of vanity; it's also a matter of health.

Some good dog grooming tips include regularly brushing your pet to avoid matting and always making certain your pet is completely dry after a bath. These and other tips can help your pet avoid "hot spots" and other skin irritations that can contribute to poor health.

Quick Tip: If you have a long-haired dog or cat, it's important to brush them regularly to avoid serious matting, which can cause your furry friend real discomfort and negatively affect their health.

🐴🐄🐖🐑 ONE LAST WEEKEND TO GO WILD AT THE KENTUCKY STATE FAIR! 🐐🐟🦭

The 2026 Kentucky State Fair is heading into its final weekend, August 28–30, and if you haven’t had your fill of animals, hoofbeats, tail wags and championship competition, there is still plenty to see! The Fair runs through Sunday, August 30, with the final day offering exhibits, rides and attractions, although some animal areas close earlier that evening.

Here are a few animal must-sees to add to your final-weekend checklist:

🐴 World’s Championship Horse Show, through Saturday, August 29
It’s your last chance to experience this spectacular Kentucky tradition in Freedom Hall. Watch world-class American Saddlebreds, Hackney Ponies and Road Horses compete for championship honors in a variety of divisions.

🦭 Sea Lion Splash
These talented sea lions bring plenty of laughs and learning to the Fair. The educational show continues through the final weekend, with scheduled performances in Lot A, including a Friday evening show on August 28. Check the official schedule for performance times during your visit.

🌲 Friday is Wildlife Day!
On August 28, stop by the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife booth to talk with wildlife biologists about Kentucky’s deer population, herd management and the upcoming deer season. You can also test your wildlife knowledge at the Fair's fish and wildlife displays.

🐄 4-H and agricultural competition continues!
Friday features the Agriculture & Natural Resources Showcase, while Saturday includes the 4-H Tractor Driving Contest and other youth competitions. These events are a wonderful reminder that the Fair is not just about fun, it also celebrates the next generation of Kentucky agriculture.

🐾 And don't forget the animals!
Make time to wander through the livestock areas and appreciate the animals, exhibitors and families who have spent countless hours preparing for the Fair. The West Wing, West Hall and Pavilion remain open through the weekend, but animal exhibit areas close at 6 p.m. on the final day, so Sunday visitors should plan accordingly.

🎡 Our final-weekend advice? Start with the animals, catch a show, cheer for a competitor, grab your favorite Fair food, and make one more lap around the Kentucky State Fair!

🐴🏆 A Louisville Tradition, A Celebration of Horses, and a World Stage

The World’s Championship Horse Show is more than a competition. Splash into the Kentucky State Fair! 🦭💦

Looking for a little sea-rious fun at the Kentucky State Fair?

Be sure to catch Sea Lion Splash, the fun and educational sea lion show in Lot A at the Kentucky Exposition Center! These amazing marine mammals are ready to entertain fairgoers while giving everyone a chance to learn a little more about them along the way.

🐾 Our tip for beating the crowds: If your schedule allows, visit the fair on a weekday and arrive before noon. Fair organizers say the biggest crowds tend to come Friday through Sunday, with weekdays and earlier arrival generally offering a little more breathing room.

So grab the family, plan your route, and make a splash at one of the Fair's most entertaining attractions!

🎡🐄 Feel Good Friday: It’s Kentucky State Fair Time! 🐓🐴

It’s that time of year again, Louisville! The Kentucky State Fair is back, and there’s something wonderfully Kentucky about spending a summer day surrounded by animals, agriculture, family traditions, rides, music, and, of course, more fried food than anyone probably needs. 😂

And for our animal lovers, there’s plenty to see!

🐕 The Marvelous Mutts are back, bringing their talented rescue dogs and entertaining tricks to the fair.

🐕‍🦺 Miller’s Border Collies are also part of the animal fun, showcasing the intelligence and incredible working abilities of these amazing dogs.

🐓 Something to Crow About! The annual Rooster Crowing Contest returns, with the finals Sunday, August 23 at 2:00 p.m. in the Pavilion. Yes, Kentucky really does have a rooster crowing contest! And yes, it is every bit as entertaining as it sounds. 😂

🐴 And don't miss all the horses! The World’s Championship Horse Show runs August 22–29 in Freedom Hall, featuring some of the finest Saddlebreds, Hackney Ponies and Road Horses in the country.

Then there are the fair traditions we all know and love: corn dogs, funnel cakes, fried treats, midway rides, blue ribbons, livestock barns and plenty of memories waiting to be made.

A little Kentucky State Fair history…

The story goes all the way back to 1816, when Fayette County farmer Colonel Lewis Sanders organized Kentucky’s first fair and stock show, just five years after America’s first fair and stock show in Massachusetts.

The Kentucky State Fair has moved around the Commonwealth over the years, including stops in Lexington and Owensboro. The first official Kentucky State Fair was held at Churchill Downs in Louisville in 1902, and after several moves, Louisville was selected as the permanent site in 1907, with the fair's permanent grounds opening in 1908.

Today, the fair celebrates 120 counties, Kentucky agriculture, animals, family traditions and the people who make the Commonwealth special. And in 2026, there’s an extra reason to celebrate as Kentucky joins the nation in commemorating America’s 250th birthday.
