I provide acupuncture, Traditional Chinese Medicine, physical therapy, laser therapy, diet therapy and routine wellness care including vaccines when necessary for cats and do

gs. I believe that the best veterinary care includes both traditional Western medicine and diagnostics with alternative therapies. I use antibiotics, steroids and other pharmaceuticals only when necessary.

My own cat needed a tooth extraction this month, and when I got the estimate I had a moment I wasn't expecting. There was an anesthesiologist, a CT because something about the presentation looked off, and by the time I added it up I was doing the thing I've watched so many of my own clients do: wondering if I could ask them to simplify it without seeming like I didn't care.

I almost called back. I didn't. It turns out being on the other side of that conversation taught me something about what my clients go through, and I talk through it in this week's episode along with a few other things I've never really said out loud before.

There's a saying from vet school: the solution to pollution is dilution. If you've ever had a UTI, you know exactly what that means...the more you drink, the faster the relief, because you're flushing inflammatory mediators straight out of the bladder. Same principle applies to cats. It's one piece of a bigger picture when it comes to litter box avoidance.

If your cat is having an asthma attack, steroids are the right call and not the time to reach for C*D or herbs. We can discuss more holistically minded options once your cat is stable. Full Cats and Steroids episode drops tomorrow.

If you've ever left a vet appointment feeling like vet care has gotten way too expensive, I want you to know as a pet parent I feel that too. I'm a veterinarian and business owner, and I'm genuinely worried about whether the average pet parent can still afford care for their animal. In this episode, JoJo and I talk honestly about what's changing in veterinary medicine and why and share all of our BIG feelings about the changes.

Has vet care started to feel unaffordable or hard to trust for you? Tell us in the comments β€” we want to hear your experience.

People used to bring me literal baskets of supplements during house calls, and here's what I'd find almost every time: even assuming the label is completely accurate about what's inside (a generous assumption), most of it isn't dosed at a therapeutic level. Chewables are especially bad for this β€” you can't pack that many ingredients into something palatable and have them all be properly dosed. New episode is up on what actually makes a supplement worth trusting.

Unpopular vet opinion incoming 🦟🫣
Did you know heartworm disease is spread exclusively by mosquitoes? No mosquitoes, no transmission risk β€” meaning if you're somewhere with a true mosquito-free winter, you don't have to keep your dog on preventative that season. Important caveat: this is regional. Places like the South or anywhere with mosquitoes year-round need coverage all twelve months. Check with your vet on what your area needs.

Most allergy treatments just manage the itch. Immunotherapy is different...it actually works to reverse the hypersensitivity itself, and it's the only approach that can stop a dog's (or cat's) allergy from getting worse year after year. My favorite veterinary dermatologist, Dr. Darin Dell, breaks it down in this clip from Tails of Truth.
