We have seen a significant uptick in botulism cases this year. All of these cases were in unvaccinated horses. Most of the cases were fatal.

Botulism is a life-threatening neurologic disease that can progress rapidly. Without prompt treatment, affected horses may become unable to stand, swallow, or breathe.

Horses are most commonly exposed through contaminated or spoiled feed, but infection can also occur through wounds or in young foals when spores produce toxin in the intestinal tract.

Help protect your horse by:

• Feeding only clean, properly stored hay and grain
• Discarding spoiled feed
• Keeping feeding/drinking areas clean

Botulism is very common in the environment around Kentucky and Indiana.

If your horse develops sudden weakness, difficulty swallowing, or trouble standing, contact your veterinarian immediately. Early treatment with botulinum antitoxin offers the best chance for recovery.

Join us in congratulating our veterinary assistant, Fiona Gallagher, as she begins an exciting new chapter!🎉

This August, Fiona will be heading to Auburn University to pursue her dream of becoming a veterinarian. Throughout her time with Gas Light Equine, she has been a dedicated, compassionate, and hardworking member of our team, and we are so grateful for everything she has contributed to our practice and our clients.

While we’ll certainly miss seeing her around, we couldn’t be more proud of her and all she has accomplished. We know she has an incredibly bright future ahead, and we can’t wait to see all that she achieves.

Mosquitoes are in full swing. With a recent detection of WNV infected mosquitoes in the Louisville area, now is a good time to remember to protect your horses from West Nile Virus!

West Nile Virus (WNV) is a serious mosquito-borne disease, but it is highly preventable with annual vaccination. The AAEP recommends the WNV vaccine as a core annual vaccine for all horses.

Horses with WNV may develop fever, weakness, stumbling, muscle tremors, or other neurological signs, and 1 in 3 horses that show symptoms will not survive. Fortunately, horses are dead-end hosts and cannot spread the virus to people or other animals.

Help protect your horses by staying current on vaccinations, eliminating standing water, using insect repellents, oscillating fans, and limiting mosquito exposure during dawn and dusk. Have any tips on what your barn does to manage mosquitoes? Feel free to share them in the comments!

Did you know that an Extended Certificate of Veterinary Inspection (Extended CVI) can be valid for up to 6 months, compared to a traditional health certificate that is only valid for 30 days?

Is Your Horse Up To Date?

A negative Coggins test is required for all travel between states and at most equine facilities/events. Most often, horses with EIA are asymptomatic carriers (showing no signs or symptoms) which is one of the reasons testing is so important. Horses positive for EIA are lifelong carriers, and pose a risk to any other horse they may be around.

Acutely infected animals may develop a fever or go off feed. A chronically infected equine may develop non-specific signs such as weight loss, weakness, anemia, and swelling of the legs, chest, and abdomen. Once acquired, EIA is a chronic, life-long infection with no known cure and no vaccine for prevention, and can even be fatal. Chronically infected equids serve as reservoirs of the virus for potential transmission to other equids.

EIA is most often transmitted by biting flies; tabanids (horse and deer flies) are considered the most significant transmitters. Other modes of transmission of EIA include the use of contaminated equipment, such as used needles and syringes; mare-to-foal transmission in utero; and through natural breeding of mares and stallions.

Obtaining a negative Coggins test ensures that the horse does not have the antibody for EIA at the time of testing. It is always recommended that horse owners regularly evaluate their horses for signs of illness. If you suspect your horse has contracted EIA or any other virus, separate them from other horses to reduce the chances of transmission and contact your veterinarian immediately.
