What actually makes someone an “experienced keeper?”
Is experience measured in years?
Number of animals kept?
The number of species you’ve worked with?
Is it success with difficult species?
The mistakes you’ve learned from?
Your willingness to learn when you already have years of experience?

There are people who have kept reptiles for decades. There are people who have kept dozens of species. And there are people who have spent years specializing in just one or two species.

All of those keepers have experience — but they’re different kinds of experience.

So where do YOU draw the line?
What makes you consider someone an experienced keeper?

There aren’t any points to win here, I’m just interested in how different keepers define it.

Some pets have names.

Some pets have full government names.

Does your pet have a middle name? And, perhaps more importantly, what do they have to do before that middle name comes out?

Should customers be able to walk around with their pets at exotics expos?

I don't mean service animals, obviously those should be allowed. But dogs, cats, and other pets, including reptiles; should they be welcome?

I swear, it's not a snake!
Legs are not a job requirement for lizards.
He did not lie on his resume!

Every even, someone asks what the legless lizards are. And When I say "legless lizard", I get one of a handful of responses:
- "Isn't that just a snake?"
- "what's the difference?"
- "No, seriously, what is it?"
- "...smartass"

Yeah, that last one actually happened. I wasn't being a smartass. I started referring to them as one of their alternate names for a while — glass lizard — for a while because of it.

Whatever you call them — legless lizards, glass lizards, sheltopusiks, or simply sheltos — they are definitely not snakes.

Would you feed maggots to your reptiles?

At the Caffeinated Lizard, I do offer Black Soldier Fly Larvae — often abbreviated to an easy BSFL — to my reptiles! And since they are fly larvae, that does make them maggots.

BSFL are naturally high in calcium so they don't require dusting. They also have a pretty decent moisture content which is great for reptiles that don't tend to drink from a water dish.

And as a bonus, when they turn into flies, they become VERY interactive feeders, especially for the geckos and other arboreal critters.

You can order yours here: https://ecoflys.com/?ref=Caffeine

When links are too big for feeding or I want to switch up the feeding experience, I cut the links open and break them into smaller pieces
