Did you know that Lyme disease is, unfortunately, a fairly common canine disease? Typical symptoms in dogs include:

☑️ Fever
☑️ Loss of appetite
☑️ Reduced energy
☑️ Lameness
☑️ Generalized stiffness, discomfort, or pain
☑️ Swollen joints

Symptoms can progress to kidney failure, which can be fatal. Serious cardiac and neurological effects can also occur. That’s why prevention is so important!

For dog owners, respiratory illness can be frightening, especially when a disease appears unusually severe or difficult to treat.

That’s why CHF-funded research is helping scientists investigate BARDiD, a potential new bacterium associated with respiratory disease in dogs. Dr. David Needle and his team at the University of New Hampshire are studying its genetic makeup and comparing the respiratory microbiomes of healthy dogs and those with canine infectious respiratory disease complex.

Every sample, every sequence, and every careful analysis helps move canine health research forward.

Simenauer Says: Look for the Hallmarks
In the upcoming June AKC Gazette: The Briard Club of America’s guest columnist is the distinguished Denise Simenauer, a Briard devotee since 1974. She has served as chair of the BCA Breed Education Committee and has mentored and tutored many aspiring Briard judges. Denise has breeder-owner-handled more than 50 AKC champions, including BISS winners, and breed winners at Westminster and the World Show.

In her June column, Denise discusses the defining hallmarks that distinguish true Briards from generic dogs.

“There are a lot of pretty Briards,” she writes, “but the mark of a great judge and the mark of a great breeder is one who can sort through the generic qualities and find and reward the dog displaying not only the structure called for in the standard, but the dog displaying the true hallmarks of the breed.”

Look for the full column in the June Gazette, hitting your inbox next week. If you don’t already subscribe to the Gazette, you can do so at https://www.akc.org/subscribe/ It’s quick, it’s easy, it’s free!

“The Briard standard calls for a tail to form a crook at the extremity. The standard goes on to say that in repose, the bone of the tail descends to the point of the hock, terminating in the crook, similar in shape to the printed letter J. Very importantly, the tail should never be carried above the topline, as it completely distorts the characteristic outline of the Briard.
“The movement of the Briard is another beautiful hallmark. Our standard describes the gait as quicksilver, giving the impression that the dog glides along without touching the ground. The standard does not describe the Briard as having extreme reach and drive. Rather, the emphasis is on gait that is supple and light, almost like that of a large feline.”]
