CALIFORNIA COASTAL CLEANUP DAY IS THIS SATURDAY!

We live in a pretty incredible place, and Saturday is a chance to spend a few hours taking care of it.

California Coastal Cleanup Day is September 19 from 9 AM to noon, with cleanup locations throughout SLO County. Grab the family, some gloves and a reusable bucket and spend the morning helping keep our beaches and waterways cleaner and safer for wildlife, pets and all of us who call the Central Coast home.

And because we want to see our community out there helping, post a photo of you volunteering at one of Saturday’s cleanup locations and we’ll give you a $5 PetHouse gift card as our little thank you for giving your time to the community.

Bringing your dog along? Bonus cookies! When they come into The PetHouse with you to collect your gift card, we’ll give your cleanup buddy a cookie for helping too.

FUN FACT FRIDAY: YOUR PET FOOD BIN MIGHT BE DOING MORE HARM THAN GOOD.

Buying a giant bag of food and dumping it into a plastic storage bin seems like the perfect way to keep it fresh. Unfortunately, that’s not the best way to store kibble.

Pet food contains fats and oils. Once the bag is opened, those fats are exposed to oxygen and begin to oxidize. Oily residue can also build up inside plastic containers, so every time you dump in a new bag, that fresh food can come into contact with residue from the old one.

Our favorite option is to keep the food in its original bag and place the entire bag inside an airtight glass or stainless steel container. You get another layer of protection while keeping the food in the packaging it was designed to be stored in. You also keep the lot number and expiration information handy in case of a recall.

And bigger isn't always better.

We recommend buying approximately what your pet will eat within 28 days of opening. The expiration date printed on the bag is for the unopened food. Once that seal is broken, air, heat and humidity start working against freshness.

That giant bag isn't actually a bargain if your little dog takes three months to eat it.

Buy the right size. Keep it in the original bag. Store that bag in an airtight glass or stainless steel container in a cool, dry place. And clean the container between bags.

Fresh food isn't just about what you buy. It's also about how you store it.

A LITTLE BACKSTORY ON OUR KITTEN WINDOW...

We’ve heard a few comments wondering why a pet store has kittens for "sale", so we figured this was a good time to explain what’s happening behind that glass.

The kittens in our cattery aren’t kittens The PetHouse has to resell. They are rescue kittens pulled from the euthanasia list at a Kern County shelter.

We provide the space. We buy their food and litter. We clean the boxes. We socialize them. We cuddle them. We let them completely destroy whatever decorations were in the window.

The rescue handles the actual adoptions and veterinary care. The kittens are spayed or neutered, vaccinated, and some are microchipped.

We take on their everyday expenses while they’re here for a pretty simple reason: every dollar the rescue doesn’t have to spend housing and feeding kittens already pulled is money they can use to save the next ones waiting at the shelter.

There’s no secret kitten-selling operation happening behind the scenes. Just a mom and daughter who are apparently incapable of looking at a kitten on a euthanasia list and saying, “Someone else will help.” So we built them a play window.

Come say hi to them. Just don't ask us which one is our favorite. We have learned nothing about maintaining professional boundaries.

GROOMING, THE WAY WE THINK IT SHOULD BE.

We’re a small mom and daughter run shop, which means we get to do things a little differently.

Our grooming is one on one because Mom never wanted to run an assembly line. We want the time to work with the animal in front of us, keep things low stress, and give them what they actually need.

That same thinking goes into the products we use. Dogs are washed and conditioned with Warren London. We compare it to human hair care. Cheap shampoo and salon quality shampoo will both get your hair clean, but there’s a pretty noticeable difference in how your hair and scalp feel afterward. We want clean without leaving the skin and coat feeling stripped and dry.

Cats get the Chris Christensen cat line because cats are not little dogs. Something that is appropriate for a dog isn’t automatically appropriate for a cat. Permethrin is a great example. It can be used in certain dog products but can be extremely toxic to cats. Product knowledge is a pretty important part of grooming.

We also don’t believe in turning a groom into a bunch of little upcharges. If it needs to be done, we do it. Nails, ears, paw pads, sanitary trim, conditioner and yes, washing their face. We still think charging extra to wash a dog’s face because you renamed it a “blueberry facial” is ridiculous. Around here, we just call that bathing the whole dog.

And because there is always more to learn, we attend certification and continuing education classes every year to stay current on grooming science, skin and coat care, products and low stress handling.

The only person around here who sometimes needs her enthusiasm managed is Mom.

She has Lupus, loves what she does, and is terrible at recognizing when her body has had enough. So Amelia controls the schedule. Not to pack more dogs into the day, but to make sure Mom can continue giving each one the time and attention that one on one grooming is supposed to mean.

There’s a whole lot packed into our little pet store.

Our Volkman seed wall is fully restocked, the healthy dog treat bar is loaded with unique treats, we have locally made artisan creations, silly dog tags we can engrave right here, and full service grooming for both cats and dogs.

When you shop at The PetHouse, you’re supporting a mom and daughter run store. We’re the ones behind the counter, grooming your pets, stocking the shelves, tracking down the good stuff, and finding products we actually feel good about offering our community.

The "big guys" can order a 2,000 lb pallet and have it delivered right to their door.

The little guys? We get in the car.

The PetHouse is closed two days a week. One of those days is usually spent driving, picking up products, hunting down inventory, and doing whatever else needs to happen to keep the things we believe in on our shelves. The other day, we try really hard to remember that we have a family and a life outside of the store.

Today’s mission: a seven hour drive to pick up product because we simply arent big enough to meet the 2,000 lb shipping minimum.

Could we just stock whatever is easiest to get? Absolutely.

But that’s not why we opened The PetHouse.

If it’s a product we believe in and something we want available to our community, sometimes being the little guy means going to get it ourselves.

Quality products like Volkman for our community are worth the drive.

GRANDPARENTS DAY + FAMILY FUN FAIR

Happy Grandparents Day from The PetHouse!

Today is a good day to get out, spend some time together and enjoy our little community.

The PetHouse is proud to be a sponsor of the Los Osos Rotary Club’s Family Fun Fair. We love supporting events that bring local families, kids, grandparents and neighbors together.

So grab Grandma, Grandpa, the kids and make a day of it.

We may be closed today, but we hope to see plenty of familiar PetHouse faces out enjoying the Family Fun Fair.

SATURDAY SPOTLIGHT: ZIGNATURE

We only put food on our shelves that we would be comfortable feeding our own animals, so bringing in a new dog food line is a pretty big deal around here.

Meet Zignature.

What made this one earn a spot at The PetHouse?

It starts with the ingredient panel.

Zignature follows a meat first philosophy, with meat, poultry or fish as the main ingredient rather than loading the beginning of the ingredient list with simple carbohydrates. Their Original recipes pair quality animal proteins with carefully selected low glycemic ingredients and added probiotics.

They also keep their recipes relatively simple. That makes Zignature particularly interesting for dogs with sensitive stomachs, food sensitivities, picky appetites, or owners who simply want to know exactly what they are putting in the bowl.

Fun Fact Friday: Not all mushroom supplements are created equal.

Mushrooms are getting a lot of attention in pet wellness, but here is the part we think is really interesting: how the mushroom is processed matters.

Mushroom cell walls contain chitin, which can make their beneficial compounds difficult to access. That is why the MycoDog and MycoCat supplements we carry use extracted mushrooms rather than simply ground mushroom powder.

Their process uses both hot water and alcohol extraction.

Hot water helps extract water soluble compounds, including beta glucans and other polysaccharides.

Alcohol helps extract other compounds that water alone does not pull out as effectively, including triterpenoids and sterols.

Then they take it one step further with a spagyric process that recovers mineral salts from the remaining mushroom material and adds them back into the finished extract.

Basically, they are trying to get more out of the mushroom than you would get by simply grinding it up.
