Clive, in Finch & Flint.
There are several coat variations of the Springer Spaniel, but the more interesting split isn’t colour. It’s between Springers and Cockers, who once came from the same litters. Size was the only thing that separated them. Pups over 25lb grew into Springers, the rest into Cockers. It wasn’t until 1902 that the Springer was recognised as a distinct breed at all.
Even now, a single bloodline can split into two almost unrecognisable dogs: one built for the show ring, one built for the field. They share a name and a pedigree, but after seventy years of separate breeding, barely anything else.
