Nothing I love more as a behaviorist than watching my middle child navigate the busy beach crowds. You can usually find him on the other side of the beach far away from us investigating other dogs and people. He spends most of his time socializing and has so many single serve encounters all by himself. I'm a hawk and always know where he is and I implicitly trust him to make very good decisions for himself and he's no pushover. Few of us know what he's capable of, but he's no joke if he's mad so the trust is real. That's what good training and rearing should produce, a dog with autonomy who makes good decisions without someone hovering over him and with zero input or games or food. Just a solid dog who can be trusted by himself.
