I’ve been grooming for over a decade, I thought I had seen it all. Then I met Harlem.
He didn’t come from the streets-he came from a family home. The reason for his condition was a lack of time, but the result was a coat that had turned into a solid, heavy rug attached to his skin.
He was finally brought to me by a friend of the family. She had spent a long time pleading with the owners to give him up, and finally, they agreed. As I worked on him, I had tears in my eyes, I couldn’t understand how someone could let a soul this sweet suffer under the weight of a such neglect.
Even though he was impatient at times, he never once tried to bite. Every time I whispered “hold down.”, he would listen. It was as if he understood perfectly that we were there to help him.
Harlem is now officially with a rescue and looking for his true”forever “ home. I wish for him to find the correct people-people who understand that his coat and his heart need a daily care.
I’m sharing this this not to shame, but to educate. Grooming is a medical necessity not a luxury.
Harlem’s family likely loved the idea of him, but they didn’t research the reality of his coat care. Doing your homework is the first step in being a responsible pet parent.
