If you’re heading to a No Kings event this Saturday, good on you!

Your dog will feel safer NOT coming to No Kings.
Protests are scary for dogs. Loud sounds, crowds,
big signs, people in unusual outfits, all of it is scary for dogs.

What if your dog panics if you leave them home alone?

From when Trixie was a puppy, we knew protests weren’t her scene. At the same time, Trixie panicked if we left her home alone.

There was a time when we missed a lot of things because our dog had separation anxiety and we didn’t want to leave her to panic alone.

Thanks to working with a Certified Separation Anxiety Trainer (like me), Trixe recovered. Now we leave her feeling safe at home when we go to events that would be way too scary for her. Like going to our local No Kings protest this Saturday.

If your dog has separation anxiety, I can help you teach your dog to feel safe home alone. Using gentle, planned desensitization, the only humane and effective way of treating separation anxiety in dogs. So you can save democracy while your dog solidarity snoozes on the sofa.

If you’d like to teach your dog to feel safe home alone, send me a message!

This is how I work with guardians to make walks easier with reactive dogs:

✏️Training
Starting in our Initial Session, we teach your dog to get away from triggers and toward snacks.

We might start with Turn-and-Go: start happy talk → run away 10 feet → pay your dog a jackpot of snacks at the end.

We’ll use food to motivate your dog. We go at your dog’s pace. So you and your dog win a lot.

At the first session we’ll practice first steps with one or two training plans. I’ll help you notice things you’re already doing great at in training.

But wait there’s more! We don’t *only* do training.

🌎Management
We talk about how you might organize your dog’s environment so that triggers don’t reach your dog, If triggers don’t come at your dog, unwanted behaviors don’t come up.

For example, this could look like experimenting with places and times of day for walks with fewer of your dog’s triggers.

We also begin learning your dog’s body language. Using science-based resources I’ve made, you can practice seeing when your dog is feeling worried or relaxed. So you can make it easier for your dog when you see they’re worried.

🛍️Enrichment
Enrichment is giving a dog options that the dog likes.

We can experiment with ways to make a walk more enriching for the dog. Like giving your dog time to sniff. Or finding a place where your dog can be on a long leash.

When walks are just too hard for the dog, we can meet needs in other ways. I’ll help you explore sniffing games, fetch, and play dates as enrichment options.

At the end of our Initial Session, you’ll go away with 1 to 3 things to experiment with during the week.

I’m here between sessions for any questions. If you send me video of you practicing with your dog, I’ll give you positive feedback on what you’re doing great at and help you troubleshoot.

If you’d like easier walks with your dog, reach out!

If you asked me how to help your dog grow confidence outdoors, this is what I’d tell you:

Give your dog lots of easy-peasy wins outdoors. Like Sebastian’s awesome humans using grass as a snuffle mat!

One skill that helps your dog get away from triggers on walks

You see a dog coming and dread your dog barking. Or the person in the unusual hat approaching that your dog’s going to go off at. I’ve been there. I used to feel close to panic in these situations. Now we Turn and Go.

Turn and Go is one of my go-to recommendations for dogs who are reactive on leash.

On a walk, if I see a trigger I do happy talk and we run away together. When we’re safely away, I give Trixie a great paycheck: a treat jackpot. Trixie gets a great paycheck because running away from a trigger is dang expensive work for Trixie – and for any dog.

I recommend starting way easier.

Here are the first 2 steps of the Turn and Go plan:

Step 1
At home, no leash on.

Go next to your dog. Start happy talking to your dog. For me this sounds like lots of “Who’s a good bean?! What a good bean”. As you continue happy talk, give your dog a GREAT paycheck: 10-15+ tiny treats your dog LOVES. Use high value treats like tiny pieces of hot dog or cheese.

Your dog is learning happy talk means a great paycheck.

Does this feel so easy it’s silly? I get that. You’re building a solid foundation. You’re doing awesome showing up for your dog.

Do this 5 times.

Step 2. Happy talk as you go 10 feet away from dog. Continue happy talk as your dog comes and you pay the jackpot of treats.

Get 5 wins in a row where your dog comes to you.

More barking at the playground lately? This might explain it.

If you notice your dog barking more at the playground, it might be because it’s getting to be Spring. Spring brings more kiddos and caregivers to the playground. And Spring brings more dogs to the playground, as parents (including me) try to meet their kiddo and doggo needs at the same time.

Dogs bark to communicate a need. With strangers, other dogs, and trikes, the need is for space. When a dog is on leash at a playground, the dog doesn’t have the option to move away on their own. So the only way the dog has of trying to get space for safety is to bark. A scared dog barks to say “I’m scared, you’re too close, go away”.

Hey, if you bring your kid and dog to the playground, you’re not alone. I do too.

I also know when the playground is going to be too hard for our dog. It’s too hard for Trixie, and might be too hard for your dog if:

🛝The playground has kids playing. To be clear, the playground is *for* kids! And too many people is scary for dogs. Kids and their grownups often try to pet dogs. Even if the dog doesn’t bark, most dogs are NOT fine with pets from strangers.

🐕There are other dogs. Many dogs are scared of other dogs. Or frustrated they can’t get to other dogs. Both of which mean barking.

⚽️There’s kids, balls, trikes, or swings in motion. Dogs know kids and play equipment often come too close.

When me and my partner take our kid to the playground, we do sometimes take Trixie.

Unless there’s no one in sight, I avoid Trixie going on the playground itself. That’s too hard for Trixie. And the playground is for kids and their caregivers, many of whom are scared of dogs.

If there’s just a few folks at the playground, I give Trixie the option to come a little closer while checking Trixie’s body language to make sure she’s feeling relaxed.

As the playground gets busier in the Spring, Trixie and I do sniffari without coming too close to the playground.

If you’re having a hard time meeting your kid’s and doggo’s needs, I see you.

Dogs are scavengers! I coach clients to teach their pups Leave Them to avoid pavement snacks and get a snack from their human instead. But I do also sometimes cheer Trixie on when she’s trying to get safe street snacks. It makes me happy to see her confident like this.

Do you ever give your dog the chance to scavenge or countersurf?
