Want to become a dog trainer ? I get the question on how I became one all the time. So here is MY advice I have for people who are interested..

Qualities I have found important for dog training

1. You must love working with and teaching people - i hear all the time, “I hate people so I’ll just work with dogs.” 🤯 Who do you think you’ll be teaching? Lol Yes you train dogs but you teach humans - even if your main for of service is board and trains (you are with the dog more than humans) you still have to teach the humans and have them be a part of it if you want the dogs new healthy behaviors to stick. 🤍
2. Open minded and eager to learn - THIS. I think it’s easy for dog trainers (really people in general) to learn one way and get stuck in it or thinks it’s better than all the rest. I 100% did this - there was a period I thought I had nothing to learn except for from an exceptional few. I wasn’t truly confident I was coming from ego and insecurity. Thankfully that phase didn’t last too long - I’ve learned from clients, dogs, kids, students in the prison program , new trainers, trainers who do things different from me, etc. I always want to keep an open mind and stay eager to learn. The moment I feel like I know everything (it will be time for a reality check and to switch careers lol).
3. Don’t put other trainers down - even if they do it differently. There are so many people that need help - be yourself and you’ll find the right fit clients and in general it’s just not professional. Energy is contagious- surround yourself with people who want to see others succeed.

How I became a trainer
* I got my certificate from animal behavior college - p.s. certificates aren’t necessary and if you’re on a budget I would suggest shadowing or workshop first
* I started as a Student, then shadowing, then assistant trainer and then head trainer at weekend classes back in the day (more on this in my next post)
* Workshops ! Do them.
* Shadow people! Expect to pay people for their knowledge and time. Excited to share who I’m shadowing in a couple weeks.

Yesterday I joined up with to work 2 of my board and trains Fenway and Louie. So thankful to have friends in the dog training bizz where we can help dogs together.
Both Fenway and Louie have come to me for dog reactivity. It’s really important to note I would not have brought them to a pack of 20 stranger dogs in the first week of their board and train. First I laid a healthy foundation with both - added structure / slowed them down and set clear rules and boundaries of what’s allowed and what isn’t. How often do we rush dogs into situations they aren’t ready for because we want them to get there, because we want to go on that hike or that dog park and how much of that has to do with our own ego?
Louie is on his 3rd week with me and it’s mainly been about slowing him down so he can make smarter choices. But habits take time - he’s been living in a state of excitement (and a little entitled) 💖 for awhile and it takes time to form healthier habits.
Fenway on the other hand is insecure and super sensitive and yep also a bit entitled. 💖 He needed more clear rules, boundaries, and limitations to understand what his job is and isn’t.
I am super proud of how both did yesterday and can’t wait to continue to build healthier habits in both.
Thank you pack and for helping me yesterday. 🐾 And happy birthday to Chris from who turned 29 yesterday for the 10th year in a row. 😉

Why love one and not the other? 💖 Eat/Buy with your heart not your habits. There are so many healthy plant alternatives to meat and dairy - there’s no humane way to kill something that we don’t need and that doesn’t want to die. Love them all. Be kind. Be a voice for the voiceless. 💖✌🏼

⭐️ Courtesy Post ⭐️ please help network - Hank’s a 10 year old mix from North Central Shelter. He’s medical due to low weight and limp but is doing so much better gaining weight and healing his leg while with us. He’s a sweet little man around 32 lbs and just loves to cuddle and explore the yard outside. He moves slightly slower but still has some pizazz. He’s calm and sweet and the perfect older buddy. ❤️ if you are interested please contact Thank you!

If only Olivia was as chill as Lily when I try to workout / practice yoga. 😂 Today I felt a bit overwhelmed by things happening around me. Sometimes it’s easy to focus on the tired and the negatives of life but remember to practice the positives (I’m reminding myself right now too). 😉 So instead tonight I am focusing on the things I am blessed with (I have so many things to be thankful for). I am grateful for my body - this amazing / healthy body that allows me to walk, run, dance, swim, walk a pack of dogs, lift Baloo in and out of the car, carry my daughter...I could go on forever. How much do we honor and give thanks to our bodies instead of focusing on the parts we don’t like ? I’m guilty of this 🙋🏻‍♀️ - So stretch, workout, drink water, eat plants, rest, and talk nice to it. It’s so easy to forget how rich in love and health we really are. 💖 When we focus on the positive and the things we are grateful for we bring more positive into our lives. ⭐️🙌🏼🌱
