The mantis’ are here! This tiny baby was in the animal room the other morning. 😲 Some of you may remember our buggy carnivore visitors from previous years. I’m thrilled that our garden has been a sanctuary for them. 🪴 This is why I leave the leaf debris over winter. Mantis, along with many species of insects, will lay their eggs in leaf piles to hatch in the spring. California mantis only live one year. 🐜 Little sq**rt was safely relocated to the flower bed. 🌻

Ceres is sharing a plate of critical care with some friends 🥣 You can see the swelling in her right cheek here. She’s on chloramphenicol and meloxicam right now. Surgery will be this week. The baby cottontails have come out of the nest! 🪹 🐇For years, the bunnies have made their den under my daughter’s front porch. She is the guardian of the bunnies, providing water and safe spaces for them. Every year, we excitedly await their spring debut. We estimate the kits to be about 4 weeks old. 💚

Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve in Huntington Beach, CA. 🌴🌼 Even the oil derrick felt at home with its graceful movements and low hum. They always remind me of dinosaurs. 🦕

Baby squirrels! 🐿️🐿️ These two appear to be siblings. They show up to the garden together and are learning that this human is not so bad. 😆 There’s another smaller single baby that came with Charlotte after she had been away for a while. 🌻 I think these two are Frida’s babies – she used to be called wobbly mama, but she’s not wobbly anymore thank goodness- and single babe is Charlotte’s. We also still see Walden every couple of days. 🥜 I know that some people find squirrels irritating and destructive, but our garden is a safe space providing everything they need, including seeds and various nuts, easily accessible water sources, and plenty of dense trees in which to hide and play. 🪴 Don’t we all deserve at least that much?

It has been a rough week. Well, few months, actually, but this week was the hay that broke the mama person’s heart. I’ll explain soon when I can put the thoughts together. For now I need some time to allow my grief instead of continuing to bury it. I’m told to give myself some grace, so I carved out an hour or so to go into nature to chat with my sorrow for a while. If I’m slow to respond, I’ll get back to you when I can. I’ll be fine. I just need some quiet.
