As the prices of everything, including groceries, have gone up it may be a hit on the budget for those of us with multiple animals, especially those requiring fresh foods. I shop for various produce items for the guinea pigs and rabbits here at the rescue at El Super, Amazon (fresh or same-day groceries), Costco, Costco business, and even Ralph’s. Peppers in particular have risen in price in the past year. Ralph’s always has 2 pounds of mini sweet peppers, and a six pack of regular bell peppers for $6 each. The mini peppers can be split in half and sometimes in thirds and still be the proper portion for a guinea pig. Amazon has three packs of bell peppers for around $3 and sometimes on sale for as low as $2.50. Costco has a six pack of romaine lettuce for $3.89. Costco business center also has 3 pounds of spring mix for $6.79, and 1 pound of cilantro for about $3. Both Costco‘s also have apples and mandarins for an excellent price. The price for carrots is the same between both Costcos and Amazon. (I buy the baby carrots because I don’t have time to peel and chop the regular kind.) El Super has a variety of herbs that guinea pigs and rabbits enjoy, along with all of the other kinds of produce you could imagine. Their prices do vary across the seasons, but it’s worth checking them out. 👩🏻🌾 Feed stores are the best places to buy hay, and a variety of kiln-dried pine shavings suitable for rabbits, guinea pigs, rats, and mice. Some also carry paper bedding way cheaper than pet stores. Some rescues like us also sell these items. Either source is way cheaper and overall better than going to a pet store. 🌻 It’s a little more effort to have to do our homework nowadays to provide for our animals, but it’s worth it to find reliable resources that don’t break the budget💰 If you have questions about the best places to buy your small critter supplies, feel free to ask here or send us a message.
