Thank you to the many clients who reviewed me on Yelp. Almost every one of you did so without any encouragement from me, which I appreciate even more. Because of you, Yelp presented me with this award, and even more pet lovers will be able to benefit from the same care I have shown your pets, even in the most difficult of times.

Today in News of the Obvious: FIV-positive cats can live with uninfected fellow felines and not transmit the virus. A veterinary study concludes this. Finally. This is a case of Notoedres (aka feline scabies, aka mange) shared by Dr. Marina Cassimatis Siegert. It is caused by a microscopic burrowing mite that causes intense itchiness, and severe scabbing and hair loss. Dr. Cassimatis' pictures show a classic case that she diagnosed with a simple skin scraping.

The treatment is also usually pretty easy. In this case she used a topical anti-parasitic medication known as Revolution. The second picture is 2 weeks into treatment. Awesome!

A bit of a fluff piece, but interesting anyway. It's funny, though, because what would researchers expect to find... that heavy metal music would be the most relaxing? :-)

New veterinary research found that different types of music produced different responses in cats under general anesthesia, with most cats relaxing best to classical music.

"Big Pharma, Big Pet Food, and Big Vet Med directly correlate with the number one cause of cancer: living long enough to get it." I have been reminding colleagues and clients of this for years. In a word... "telomere". (Yes, there are many contributing factors, but aging is the only one that is impossible to escape).

Cancer. It’s scary stuff. Every day, I hear another story of an elderly dog and cat diagnosed with neoplasia, and my heart hurts for those dealing with it. Without a doubt, cancer sucks, and every new breakthrough is a gift.

My formula for the day:

Two months of treatment + 2 grid keratotomies + patience + persistence = 1 healed corneal ulcer + 1 elated vet + 1 elated dog owner.

Congratulations to Max and his loving family, the Steins! Our hard work and a little faith paid off.
