Opossums live short, difficult lives, yet they spend their nights doing work many people never see.

Most only live about one to two years in the wild. They move through backyards, forests, roadsides, and neighborhoods after dark, searching for food while avoiding cars, dogs, predators, and harsh weather. Their lives are brief, but their role in nature is meaningful.

Opossums help clean the world around you. They eat pests, insects, carrion, and sometimes even venomous snakes. They also help reduce ticks, which can carry disease. In their quiet way, they support the balance of the places they pass through.

Still, many people fear them because of how they look or because they appear at night. But opossums are usually shy, gentle animals. When scared, they often freeze, hiss, drool, or play dead because they want to survive, not attack.

Kindness can be simple. Give them space. Do not harm them. Slow down when you see one near the road. Let them keep doing the work nature gave them.

Opossums may not live long, but they leave the world cleaner than they found it.

🚨In a significant development in the tragic case of Orelha, the beloved community dog who was brutally attacked, tortured, and later died from his injuries in Praia Brava, Brazil, authorities in Florianópolis have ordered a new forensic examination.

With judicial approval, his body was exhumed at the request of the Ministério Público de Santa Catarina, and the Polícia Científica de Santa Catarina is conducting further analysis to strengthen the evidence as the investigation moves forward.

His death has sparked outrage across Brazil and worldwide, with advocates demanding justice and stronger legal enforcement against extreme animal cruelty, especially in cases involving juveniles. ⚖️

Do you know me?

My name is Orelha & I was a homeless community dog in Brazil that was brutally murdered by 4-5 minors! I was tortured. I was beaten. My murder may had been recorded! I was found on January 4th 2026. Due to the severity of my injuries I was euthanized the next day on January 5th 2026. At least 3 adults are under investigation for obstruction of justice. One of those under investigation is reportedly a police officer and the father of one of the suspects. At least 2 of the minors that muredered me fled to Orlando Fl. I was only 10 year old! Loved by my community.

I deserve justice!

My demanding Dobie - oh so vocal for treats, play time & rubies…
My joy & laughter - with a perfectly timed goofy move or silly gesture…not to mention, your adorable little face…
You were my loyal best friend.

You touched not just me, but all those who met you - & our hearts ache from losing you. We will miss you until we meet again.
It was a privilege to be your pet parents & once we finish grieving, we will celebrate you - for the journey of life has truly been sweeter with you by our side.
